Local shop has a Ludwig/Lowe 1895 7mm mauser. Well used, original overall condition, not matching bolt, good bore, tight lock up. I don't know much about these. Can get it for $100. If was a caliber I already reloaded for I'd have got it, sort of of hate to add another. But then I hate to pass up a Mauser. I did get a German sawtooth bayonet from him for $20. I guess I ought to buy it. Suggestions?

Thanks

They are not quite as strong as a good '98 but decent enough actions. Handload light, or US made factory loads, and you should be good to go.

Crest?

If it has the crest, absolutely, it's about a fifth of fair market. If it doesn't, it's still a very good buy, they average $200-250 in good shape without.

The 1895's went to a lot of places. Usually a mis matched bolt kills the value but not aways- some of the Boer war mausers have mm bolts. $100 for a shootable 1895 is OK no matter what. Some of the mauser or c and r boards have a wealth of info. Parallax bills curio and relic board , gunboards mauser forum, etc.

Crest wise, usually the ones we see ground were the Argentine 1891 mausers.
The most common 1895's are Chilean , with the chilean crest and modelo chileano written on the receiver side.. If it has no crest, or a stylized L (Loewe), it could be a rare piece.

Thanks for the info. I'll get it later today. It doesn't have a crest and cursory examination showed it not to have been ground. Think a little work and lots of TLC will present a decent historical gun. Din't think it was import stamped either.
