I'm just making sure, but I have some copper plated lead buckshot and am wondering if it is safe to fire out of a 1897?

For a vintage barrel, I would non coated lead. They were not using copper plated stuff back then, this is the safe choice, and of course, don't use steel shot.

Hmmm? With a modern wad, does the shot even touch the barrel? Or are you thinking copper plated might not adapt to the very full choke on a 97?

Unless it's Federal Flite Control, buckshot won't have a shot sleeve. It will contact the barrel.

Lubaloy copper plated shot was introduced by Winchester in 1929.

I have shot copper plated buck and bird shot out of my 1897 12ga on occasion. Can't tell that it hurt it any. Mine has been threaded for choke tubes if that makes any difference.

My 97 was made in 1917. I shoot ANY 12 ga 2 3/4n load in it. Hvae killed several deer with it. No 2 3/4 in load buckshot or birdshot will harm it.

When shooting lead, any thoughts on whether it is any worse for a 100 year old barrel to shoot buckshot rather than birdshot?

(in my case it's a Marlin .410 from 1929/1930, only takes 2-1/2" and shorter)

Ugh.....Have you cut open any modern BS shells?..............The old ones didn't . The new ones do.
When did the ammo companies start using them? I cut open several in the 70s and again in the 90s and did not see any sleeves.

Most of my inventory is from the 1990s. I bought big back then and haven't had much opportunity to use them in the last 30 years or so.

... I didn't know 2.5" 410 buck was even available. ...
These days some folks think .410 anything is a myth made up by old timers.

When I took my MIL on a Sunday drive in the country in the late 1990s, I'd stop at a country store on the way and buy a box or two of these. They pattern closer from my .410 than the 3 inch 5 pellet 000 load. Which I found odd.

I know it's not a myth, but it is one of the most useless guns/gauges ever devised in my opinion. Somewhere in the same category as the 9mm shotguns and the "birdshot" shells for handguns. But this thread isn't about the 410, so I guess my opinion really isn't warranted. I just stated that I wasn't aware 410 buck was still made, because it is illegal to hunt with 410 buck in Arkansas and just figured that most states had similar regulations.

I used to shoot squirrels with a .410 pump, with good results. Like many other calibers/gauges it just needs to be used within its limitations.
