Be aware that many common gun cleaners will strip that nickel finish right off the gun. I don't own any Nickel guns, so I can't remember which gun cleaners are "nickel friendly." I'm sure someone here can make a suggestions.

Just something to think about before you clean it up.

I think the old PP grips would fit because it's the same frame. Midway sells repros, but it's a risk. There may be some dimensional differences.

This outfit has grips, but I think they only have the black kind, not ivory. They are good, though, and price is reasonable. Looks like you want their number C/48.

My error on what I thought was a crack, it is just the gap where the sideplate fits on the frame. From the factory, that line is just about invisible and I wasn't used to seeing that obvious a joint. That was probably done when the gun was buffed prior to being nickeled, as a closeup shows that the nickel plating is not factory and was done over old pitting after heavy filing and buffing.

Jim:

I looked at your link, and they seem to be out of business, or going out of business. Check the home page. :(

I'm not sure Police Positive grips will fit perfectly as Colt did redesign some aspects of the New Police when they did the update. They modified the lockwork, changed the cylinder latch, and may have altered the frame size/shape. I can't say for sure as I couldn't find any photos which have the two guns side by side. As for the nickel finish, I would try Flitz; I use it on my older nickel guns and it does a fantastic job of cleaning and polishing, without any harm to the finish.

Early Colt Police Positive revolvers came with two different sized stocks, called narrow and wide. The narrow size fit the New Police and .32 Police Positive. The wider ones fit the .38 Police Positive (.38 S&W that is) but eventually the .32 frame was changed to the wide style. I believe that Numrich (www.e-gunparts.com) have black plastic stocks that duplicate Colt's hard-rubber style. Should you order a set be sure to specify that you have a New Police model that takes the narrow ones. Also notice that they come without a screw. Either order a screw set, or use the ones in the present set. Hopefully they will fit.

Thanks for info, the hard black is what I want.....as I think that was what they came with originally.

One question you said the nickel looked to be added later, another person mentioned they thought that in the colt forums, when I took it to local shop though they told me they thought nickel was original factory job.......how do I tell?

BTW, had friend on SWAT run serials, clean as a whistle.......I guess that doesn't prove wether or not it could have veer been used for a crime, but there is no record on it. He actually made an offer on it as it remineded him of his dads police positive, I might sell, but honestly I kinda want to get it cleaned, up and ship shape, springs checked etc, and shoot it some first.....I'd never forgive myself if I didn't.

Also want to say you guys have been great, your better then if I had my own Antiques road show moment.
