I am working on a project 1903a3 and was desireing to put a nicer stock on it, without dropping some serious money on a custom stock. I see a lot of options for the 98 and from what I understand the two rifles are very common. Would it be possible to take a aftermarket 98 target stock and put a 1903 in it. I have only found 2 stocks for the 1903 and im not really a fan of either one. However Hogue makes a nice one for the 98 that I would love on a 1903.

Anyone else tried this before?

Also this is a rifle that has been sporterized already so im not affecting any original value here (it was drilled for new sites, and scope mounts).

A stock inletted for a 98 Mauser will not fit a 1903, the action screws and floor plate dimensions are different. There aren't many 1903's being sporterized anymore, therefore not many stocks being offered. They are out there, you might try a Want To Buy listing on one of these forums, I am sure someone has one they would be willing to part with.

Ok weird twist here. My 1903 has a 98 floor plate and magazine box. So would that matter. It works fine, and ive never had enough of a problem to justify replacing it (fit is ok to).
Thanks though Ill put up a WTB add and see what happens.

The ramline might be what I go with but I was really hoping for a nicer unit, and I just love the feel of all things Hogue.

22lr richards offers its target stocks inletted for the 1903. you can also build your own using any of the wood aftermarket or a bubba'ed military stock as a base. follow the links here for examples & tips on how to do it

Many thanks Dirty jim I never new Richards did 1903s. But again thats why I asked the question. Many thanks, and the forum you gave me looks very promising.:)

Ok I picked up a 1903a3 floorplate, follower and spring the other day and now im really puzzled. I pulled the k98 stuff out and it seems the rifle is currently in a k98 stock as the K98 stuff fits perfectly and the 1903a3 has larger dimensions. So im at a lose of what to do. Do I risk a Hugues stock not working, or do I just bite the bullet and get a custom job specifically for the 1903a3.

This is my rifle as it is now, and the fit in the k98 stock is near perfect.

Deja Vu, all over again?
Oh, another thread I just answered on the same thing.

But if you ask me, again:
That one right there looks pretty darn good the way it is!
