1908 Brazilizan Mauser...worth it?

how much would one expect to pay for a customized 1908 brazilian?

this rifle has a custom thumbhole stock (a beautiful piece!),new heavy barrel without iron sights (not drilled and tapped yet), and a nicely turned bolt lever/handle/or just bolt.

i know that pristine brazilians go for $1000 but i am not sure of a rifle like i am talking about. any ideas?

There is no hard and fast answer to this question. The collectability is gone - it's utility is now as a hunting arm. Will it perform better than an off the shelf Remington, Winchester or Savage? Do you like the configuration it's in? Do you want it?

IMO its intrinsic "value" is now about $200. If I liked the gun, and had been looking for a sporterized 1908 Brazilian Mauser with a thumbhole stock, I might go as high as $350.

The most important thing to remember is that, since it is now so heavily sporterized, it is really no longer a 1908 Brazilian Mauser, it just is what it is. It is truly worth what you or anyone is willing to pay for it, but it has no value other than its utility. IMO folks with guns like this usually dramatically over-value them, and they usually never sell.

I agree with vanfunk.

If it is sporterized/modified in any way thats not how they were made 100 years ago, then it looses a ton of value. If your looking for any collector/historical value you should forget about it because the gun you describe has no collector value left.

If you just want something to shoot and plan to never sell it, then go for it, I'm sure with a new barrel its a great shooter.

How much do you want to pay? I just got a very nice older sporterized Arisaka 7.7 with a well fit aftermarket stock, pachmayer butt pad and scope bases for $110. Yours is in a more usable caliber, but ...

i was thinking around $200 out the door. i like the round and have components for loading and REALLY like the stock!

but i simply want to finish it out. i have little real desire to shoot the weapon much. was just wondering if i put $200 into it if i could turn it over for any profit.

doesnt sound like it though....
