I have just purchased a 5-1909 built Webley mk 4 in great shape less bluing. It has been chemically stripped to the bare metal likely in prep for plating there is 0 bluing left on this piece at all not even internals. I would like to refinish it as it is turning brown/rust daily I would like to poly coat it clear as to preserve the ordinal markings it is an interesting piece the initial markings are for the Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment Royal Engineers that has been crossed out and the remainder of the markings are very worn as to unreadable. Please help I don't want to blue it or plate it I figure some sort of clear coat to keep it as protected as possible with out killing the markings. What can I do?

I would have it rust blued as that was the original finish; that can be done without any great harm to the markings if care is taken in polishing. Some polishing will be necessary to remove surface grunge that will interfere with the bluing, but a good restorer will not overdo it.

Whether you think this is a DIY job is up to you and depends in part on what you think or know the gun is likely to be worth if properly restored.

Since the finish has been removed and you don't want to reblue it, clean off any rust with pure coconut oil (get it at a food store) and a nickel (five cent piece). The nickel won't harm the patina.

Then treat the bare metal with Renaissance Wax. It was developed by the British Museum, is microcrystalline so it penetrates the metal's pores, is PH neutral so it won't harm the object, and is used worldwide by museum conservators to protect metal, leather and wood objects. Apply a thin coat and rub it in and you should be good for years. I bought mine at the Woodcraft Store but you can find it online.

BTW, I used to use Frog's Lube until I found out it was coconut oil. ;)

WOW Awesome tip! I was almost ready to send it off to get reblued. I just watched a few videos on Renaissance Wax. I'm sold. Thank you very much, $20 beats $400 plus shipping a gun any day of the week.
