1911 ammo: best JHP reliability

I hope to be the proud owner of a 1911 sometime this summer (likely a Springfield Mil-Spec). In the mean time, I am doing all the background research and am trying to learn as much about the 1911 as possible.

One area I am interested in is feed reliability of various jacketted hollopoint rounds. That way, I can narrow down my search to a few of the best and look for the best deals in my area. So, what is everyone's experience with these choices? I did throw in a few JHPs that I've heard are a little testy when it comes to reliable feeding in a 1911, just to see what kind of responses they get.

Please feel free to vote for more than one if you've had good experience with multiple choices.

I've used WWB 230gr JHP, Remington Golden Saber 230gr, and just recently switched to DoubleTap 230gr Gold dots. All have worked flawlessly in my 1911s, and I wouldn't feel undergunned with any of these loads. I used to use WWB JHP because it was cheap; but with the rising cost of ammo, a box of 50 WWB or 50 DoubleTaps are only a few bucks different in price, so I went with DT. Golden Sabers were also great in my gun, but are a little pricey for me to practice with consistently.

Remington Golden Saber has always been easy on the 1911 throat, among others. I use those and Federal Hydra-Shok and Hi-Shok, Cor-bon Pow'rBall, Fed EFMJ. I plan to add Winchester Ranger T soon.

Annotated version of my previous post:

WWB 230gr JHP, Remington Golden Saber 230gr, and DoubleTap 230gr all flawless for me.

I've had the best luck with Speer and Federal 230 gr. JHPs with ogives (bullet sides) that closely resemble the standard 230gr FMJ bullet. Hornady XTPs never fed in my Springfield GI, nor my SIG GSR (though the GSR is a tempermental beast). The SA GI would even feed handloaded lead semi-wadcutters, so the XTPs kinda freaked me out when it wouldn't feed them.

Do a google search on Federal HST. This is the next generation, replacing Hydrashok. The 230gr +P has some awesome expansion results, outperforming almost everything else in all kinds of tests.

Many people are unaware of HST and assume Hydrashok is the latest and greatest. Even true in my local store - they had a whole shelf of Hydrashok, but I noticed a few boxes of HST buried in back on the bottom. They didn't appreciate the difference.

Hornady's XTP's feed great, and I have guns that will feed anything, including the flying ashtray. If if your gun is finicky try Remington 230 Gr. Golden Sabers. If they won't feed those, there is no hope. I voted 230 Gr. GS. :)

45ACP ammo

You might also look at the DPX line.

I have about 200 rounds of the Taurus 185 gr. HEX, their name for the DPX, and they have expanded well in everything I have shot them into ( water jugs, wet newspapers and even a couple of larger road kills:uhoh: ).

Do a search on the DPX line of ammo to find out more about them.

Winchester .45acp 230gr Rangers (non +P) work great for me in both my 1911s (Kimber & RIA).
