I am breaking in a 1966 Colt Government that had never been fired so we are talking a very tight gun here.

I bought a couple of the Wilson mags and when loaded with eight I get a lot of resistance when I try to insert them into the gun. I don't try to force it. I have left them loaded with 8 rounds for a couple of months just to see if it might be a spring issue, but no noticeable change.

I get a little resistance with the factory mag. If I load the Wilson with 7, it feels like the factory mag but will insert. No feeding issues or anything like that with either mag.

Being new to the 1911 I am wondering if this will work itself out as the gun loosens up or if I should just stick with loading 7 which is fine with me.

The only time I had ever fired a Colt Government was when I was in Army Infantry school 45 years ago but I have to admit, I am hooked.

The only visual difference between Wilson seven and eight round magazines is shape of the follower. It is convex in 7 round mag and concave in 8. Are you sure those are not seven round magazines?

The are definitely concave followers

I just checked to be sure and they are concave. They will hold 8 with no problem.

The magazine just doesn't want to seat when loaded with 8 and I am not going to force it.

I am assuming the spring pressure is too great when fully loaded.

I am OK with just loading 7 but curious none the less.

First off for clarity, I'm assuming these are Wilson 47D's and not ETM's, correct?

This is with the slide forward only, correct? I assume with the slide locked back they insert just fine, correct?

As mentioned, those 8 rounders have the same tube length as Wilson's 7 rounders. There is room for 8 rounds in that tube, but just barely. They will most likely insert, but you probably need a little more effort than you are comfortable using. As they get more use, they will become easier to seat, but will most likely never be as easy to seat as a 7 full size rounder.

Wilson's ETM's have a longer tube and will be easier to seat than the 47D's.

As a reference point, you can watch Tiger McKee insert mags in his 1911. I think he's using Wilson 7 rounders though, but he's still giving them a firm smack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkZgYb-ReSU

I use both 47D's and ETM's in my Colt government. It takes a pretty good smack to seat either when loading mags with the slide closed.

Yes they are 47D

As I said, I am new to 1911.

It seemed odd to me that the mag would seat with 7 rounds and not 8 so I assumed it was because the spring was new.

I guess if I want to load 8, I will have to give it a good wack. Not something I would want to have to do in a stressful situation especially if I had reason to reload.

However, that does answer my question. I say thankya.

I suspect most of your reloads would be done with the slide locked back. Am I correct there is no problem loading the mag with the slide locked back?
