I have a hankering for a stainless 1911. I only have $550 to spend and I have been shopping fairly aggresively on the web. Anyone have any experience with Springfield GI? I know the sites are pretty crappy, but can they be replaced easily?

Any other ideas on makes and models would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Anyone have any experience with Springfield GI?
Yup. Great gun, buy it. Mine had a bad extractor out of the box, but Springfield replaced it and the gun's eaten everything I've fed it ever since. I am not sure how easily the sights can be replaced, but it's been said here and elsewhere that the GI is a good base gun for a buildup. I've been pondering the idea of sending mine back to the folks in Geneseo and having it upgraded to the Loaded specs, but we'll see.

Please do not waist your time with a stainless GI for $550:mad:. For the same price you can purchase a stainless STI Spartan ;)it comes with all of the bells and wistles that most folks add on any way:D.

The Spartan does not come in stainless. I have one on order. Cool gun.

I'd say get a SA Mil-Spec since it already has better sights than the GI and a lowered & flared ejection port.

I think the Mil-Spec is a better investment than the GI for the reasons just mentioned.

i would be the first to suggest any handgun made by sa, they are a great compay that stand behind thier products they take care of the customers , they make great weapons, i have shot gi's in the past and i was very impressed with them. i own a sa mc operator and i will definetly add a gi to my inventory in the future. the sights are easy to fix.
