1911 and .22lr conversion

I have been thinking about getting a 1911, and one of the important things I'm looking for is good compatibility with the 22 conversion kits out there. Anyone have experience using these with the Smith and Wesson 1911's? I have heard that they have a few slight non-1911 spec changes, but I'm not sure where (or how they would affect the conversion)

Also, any thoughts on which conversion kit is the best? Most accurate? Reliable? Jam free with the crappy bricks of el-cheapo ammo that would make it fun (and worth the $) in the first place?

I have a great SW1911, and a Kimber .22 kit. Work fine together. The kit, which also worked on a Commander, is a bit iffy sometimes - seems with one of the mags esp. (all kimber made). High velocity ammo is a must. VERY accurate, and overall a keeper.

A good purchase, that can be picked up with no hassle. (i.e. registration, legal issues etc)

The SW has been 100% reliable with all ammo, including .400 corbon via an Ed Brown barrel. HIGHLY recommend them. As for differences - the obvious one is the external extractor on the SW. Also, the grip safety acuates the fp safety, not the triogger like in a Colt, and it has a full length guide rod.

I've had a Ciener for many years.


Nice unit, pretty accurate, reliable when fairly clean.

If I were buying one today, it would probably be the Target version from Advantage Arms. Their slide locks back, where my 2nd choice Marvel does not.

Consider this a vote for the Colt Conversion Unit, discontinued as it may be. I used them when I was a kid and have had my current one since 1974. It gets used fairly often. The ammo that it prefers, and that does not tend to clog up the floating chamber, is Federal American Eagle 38 grain HVHP. Not sure if the other aftermarket units are aluminum, but this is all steel.

I have two original Colt Convercion kits, with the floating chamber. One of them is the "ACE" model.
None of them is reliable with any kind of ammo. But like said, with HV ammo, it jams a little less.

I gave up using them.

Since I bought them used, I don't know if there is something wrong, even because I can't have a new one to compare. One thing, that came to my attention, is that I felt the springs a little heavy for the .22, so I ordered a 14lb. spring from Wolff, but I haven't test is yet.

Well, I had a Ciener Kit once, and sold it because it had fixed sights. It was reliable and I never had a any failure. Too bad I sold it

I've heard the best is the Marvel kit, but it's priced accordingly. Sub 1" groups at 50 yds. That's better than a lot of rifles.

1911 22 kit.

I have had the Marvel unit and a Kart unit. I sold the Marvel and kept the Kart. Look on some of the sale forums you can find them for 350.00 to 400.00 and whole guns for 450 to 600.00. It made out of steel and built like a tank.
PS they are match grade accurate.

I got one of the Marvel No. 1 conversions on sale from Midway. It is mounted on my old Colt Series 70 frame. Works well. Mags are Colt Ace mags. Colt mags are iffy, clone mags that I got from Brownell's are ok.

Had a Ceiner, sold it and went for the Marvel. The Marvel is a keeper but if I was to buy a conversion unit today I think I'd try the new Advantage Arms model. Similar design as the Marvels but less expensive. I think they hold the slide open after the last shot unlike Marvel.

What clone magazine is that? I've always felt the magazines for my Marvel were the weak point. I've got the Brownells catalog. What's Brownell's name for them?
