Can anyone recommend a good book or a good video/dvd on maintenance and/or gunsmithing of the 1911. Not looking for a book on different makes/models, but something that would provide a better general knowledge and would include takedown beyond fieldstripping and some customizing.

If you have a favorite or know of one that is helpful I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks.

You will find everything you want in: "The Colt .45 Automatic - A Shop Manual" by Jerry Kuhnhausen (VPS Publishers; Box 887, McCall, Idaho 83638. They also have instructional Video tapes.

Kuhnhausen has two volumes to the 1911 shop manual ... I only have Volume I and it has a wealth of the information that you are looking for. I've never seen Volume II, but I understand that has more of a focus on detailed engineering drawings and is more for the person that wants to make 1911 parts ... Brownells sells the Kuhnhausen books. By the way, his Mauser shop manual is first rate as well.

Kuhnhausen's books are the best. Halleck is dated, but OK if you're less technical.

For video I prefer the AGI tapes. For serious 1911 work they have a 7 tape series that shows more that most books will ever contain.
