I would like to get an instructional book or DVD on how to take apart, re-assemble, and do basic repairs on a 1911.

I'm not a gunsmith, and don't pretend to be one. I have a basic set of tools and a dremel, but no machine shop in the garage.

All I'd like to do is take it apart a little beyond a basic field strip and replace basic parts.

Can anybody suggest a good book or DVD that will go through all of this in detail (in the case of a book with lots of pictures)?

Why don't you just go by your local gun store and ask them to show you? If you were around where I live I'd be happy to help a potential customer.

AGI (American Gunsmithing Institute) makes great DVDs on the complete take down of many different makes of guns, including the 1911. I have a couple of them and highly recommend their DVDs.

Thanks! That link does help, but I still want to go a little bit more into detail. I'm just the kind of person that if I want to upgrade a part (for example, put in an extended mag release button), I'd hate to pay $30 per 1/2 hour (what the gunsmith charges) when I'm sure it is easy to do myself if shown step by step.
