1911 chambered in .22?

I have a Chiappa 1911-22 that I like. Reliable, easy to shoot, and doesn't hurt my fused wrists. But from the negative internet chatter on the Chiappa, I certainly wouldn't suggest you run right out and buy one without doing your homework.
As I mentioned, I'm happy with mine but from what I've read, the GSG is worth the little bit more it costs over the Chiappa.

I like my Chiappa. Top shelf it is not, but accurate and reliable it carries in spades.
If I specifically wanted a 1911 in .22LR I would go the conversion route. I went this way as it was my very first self purchased firearm. It was the right price, and it was right there.
Now with my many rimfires, I would go for a classier, more robust pistol.
This one has about six thousand rounds through her. I still take her out. She still runs. And, because she is a 1911, she looks marvelous doing it!

The GSG came in Wednesday. I was at our gun club yesterday evening and put about 200 rounds through it with no malfunctions. It was accurate and it's weight (for a 22) made it easy to shoot. I was surprised at how well the sights popped, being a type of luminescent green. GSG did a great job making this feel and function like a true 1911. My LGS also had a M&P 22 compact, which I was also looking for and I picked that up as well. I put about 100 rounds through that, also with no malfunctions. I'm pretty well stocked on 22 and will be shooting a lot of it.

Is the GSG more true to form? Is it actually steel?
Or at least real aluminum?
I probably couldn’t part with my first gun purchase ever, but I’m looking for another 1911 .22, a nice quality one. But not necessarily a proper frame with a kit. (As I look at the prices now...)

Attached is a review from TTAG. I guess the slide of the GSG is made from a zinc alloy and I'm not sure what the frame is made of, but as they state in the review it has the same manual of arms as a "real" 1911 as well as parts interchangeability for quite a few of the parts. I'm not saying it's a true 1911, only that they did a good job of mirroring one. I'm very happy with it, especially for the $269 I paid for it. I'd recommend picking one up. Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore is sold out of the black ones, but has tan ones in stock.

Conversion kit will not work on a 9 mm frame it won't go past the ejector but it will work on a 10 mm frame. I have an AA unit and it runs like a race horse.

Steel is worth many times what zinc alloy is IMO, and I'm pretty sure RIA uses Chromoly steel.

I have a Wilson 22LR slide assembly on a Colt MK IV Series 70 frame. It shoots well.
The frame developed a crack in the dust shroud after the collet bushing broke a finger and got jammed in the recoil spring channel. I figured 22LR would not put too much stress on the dust shroud so I bought the Wilson slide kit.
(Note, the 45 ACP slide assembly was fitted to an Olympic frame)
I'm not sure if the Wilson kits are still available.
