Looking at Colt Gold Cups. Is there anything different or specially done to a Trophy model as opposed to a regular Gold Cup??

NO. Just the opposite, in a bad way, at least the one I owned. I bought a new blue Gold Cup Trophy a few years ago. It was not as well fitted or finished as my earlier gold Cups. Mine even showed evedence of Dremel grinding for some reason on the disconnector rail. So-so slide to frame fit. Nothing special about the trigger pull. I had not owned a Gold Cup for several years and just decided to try a current production one. Wish I had looked it over better BEFORE plunking my money down. My "TROPHY" version was not a winner. That being said, I handled a new Stainless GCT a couple weeks ago. This was the one with the round top slide and Bomar type rear sight. The finish, slide-to-frame fit and trigger was much better than mine. The trigger was probably 5# or so, but reasonably clean. A good duty type trigger. Over all, it appeared to be a very nice gun. Much nicer than my blued one in all respects, as far as I could see without field stripping...

The "Trophy" is the latest iteration in a long line of pistols that were the top of the line, purpose built target gun in Colt's line up. Colt recently updated their website and now they list the "Gold Cup Series", which doesn't mention the "Trophy" portion of the gun's name. The Gold Cup Trophy isn't a package, or a special version or anything like that. It is the standard Gold Cup model, and the only Gold Cup model.

Colt first started with the National Match in the 1930's, and produced them up until WWII halted all civilian firearm production. In the 1950's Colt reintroduced the gun, naming it the Gold Cup National Match. They remained relatively unchanged until the Series 70 modifications in 1970, and the Series 80 modifications in 1983. In 1997 Colt dropped the National Match portion of the name and changed it to Gold Cup Trophy, which is the one you see on dealer shelves today.
