Dropped by the gun shop and picked up hammer, sights, trigger and grip safety for a project during the recent snow /ice storm. Took my old SAI MilSpec and installed using tools in the garage, with the exception of borrowed front & rear sight tools from a buddy. Considering this was the first time to have a 1911 completely apart, I thought it turned out okay, I was leary of grinding on the frame  Well how did I do ?

For the longest time, I didn't see the "before", and didn't scroll down, so I was like "what's the big deal"? Then I saw the words, felt stupid, and scrolled down, and WOW. Talk about a transformation! Now you have a "custom" gun that you can sell for close to $800 or more  --except in your case, it's really "custom" in the fact you assembled it. Looks very nice, great polish on that slide, too! :D

Man, I wish there was a gunshop around here that carried parts.

Very nice job. The Mil-Spec is one of the nicest pistols around to use as a base gun for a build up.

Great job!
I just recently (like, the first of the week) bought a SA GI-45 in stainless. I was also thinking of dressing it up a little. Now that I see what can be done (albeit, with the Mil-Spec), I'm stoked to order some parts and get busy myself!
You *are* lucky to have a store nearby that handles parts. We're doing good in my one-horse town to even have a gun store at all.

Thanks for sharing the pics, you've invigorated me!

Nice job. How difficult was the hammer and trigger swap? Any lessons learned?

JB,

The trigger just dropped in nicely, It was a Wilson trigger, The hammer dropped in also, It did not need fitting, I did smooth the edges a little befor dropping in. The Frame took a little time. put the frame on my side grinder and took off most of the metal. After that I temp installed the grip and filed to fit - then sanded - then buffed for final fit. Btw, I shot about 300 rounds today and I don't like the sights, all black and I can't see when shooting against dark background. I wasted my $$ on them, nice quality, but can't see.
Guess I'll get some novaks in a few weeks, I hear good things about them, anything with dots or fiber will be better.

Rough fit:
