I am interested in trying some different grips for my 1911 Colt series 80. They dont have to be pretty just fill the hand a bit more and provide better control than the standard grips. I don’t have any experience with different grips so am looking for recommendations of something readily available.

The Colt "80 Series" has been in production for over 25 years and has worn many different grips in that time. What grips are you "starting from" in wanting to get more control?

Generally, the checkered wood diamond grips that come on them offer excellent control and feel - the design has really been little changed in over 100 years. The trick is to get a proper grips with good fore-aft tension on both the front strap and grip strap. Most people's groups improve with thinner grips, actually (it forces them to get a more proper grip).

If your hands are really large, this of course is different for you. Pachmayr and colt "wrap around" black rubber grips provide a little more volume and also texture on the front strap, and are cheap to try - many available as "take-offs." Here's what those look like. Widely available used for like $15 or less:

+1 on VZ Grips. I have them on both of my 1911's and love them. I have their Operators on my DW CBOB, and their Alien's on my Colt Gold Cup. I like the Operators for carry, but would not recommend the Alien's for daily carry. Your experience may vary.

If I just wanted to shoot I'd use a set of the Pachmayer wrap-around grips.

If I wanted to look elegant & classy, I'd use aged elephant ivory.

If I wanted to look like a pimp, I'd use mother of pearl.

Hogue wrap-around grips. I put them on my 1911 and it makes a huge difference! Easy to install, much more gripping area, and much less twisting in the hand. BTW, I have big hands.

as you can see above many different preferences. the moral of this story is you will be best served by handling many different styles to determine YOUR needs. my preferences have no bearing on your's.

depends on what you need the grips for. if you want some nice classy looking wood grips that offer a less secure hold, or if you want G10 grips that get you a secure hold for better control and faster followup shots.

I vote for Hogue Grips. The finger grooves help a lot with keeping a positive grip during recoil. I have small hands BTW.

I use Horn grips, and I absolutely love them.

EDIT:

I also use a Pearce grip insert, and I like the way it feels, but I think I might chuck it soon
