Okay..........I have decided on finding a 4" 1911 to use as a CCW piece.
From what I can find out teh Springfield Champions are hard as hell to get.
I like Springfields best but there is a Kimber Compact Stainless pre series II at my local shop.

Should I keep looking for a Springfeild or have guys had good luck with the Kimbers?

Also, would the full size grip on the champions be that much harder to conceal?

I like the Springfield Champion myself, but they do seem harder to get than the other barrel lengths. If the Kimber is priced right and 4" is definitly what you want, go for it, they are fine guns.

I replaced my Kimber CDP II Pro with a CDP II Ultra. I really like it a lot! I shot and carried a Colt LW Commander for years before I got the Kimber Pro. I will keep my old friend the Commander, but the Kimber CDP II Pro will probably help finance something else.:)

i really like the 4" 1911's as well, and i have personally been looking and lusting after the kimber pro carry tle lg, with the crimson trace laser grips, night sights, etc, if you don't want the laser grips you can get them without.
you can't go wrong with a kimber they are awesome handguns and will serve you well.

Don't forget about Colt. they have this pistol called a Commander that is the cat's meow.

I would not be hesitant at all about purchasing a Series 1 Kimber, if the price was right.

The advantage of the Commander is being able to sit easier with the pistol on your belt. The grip lays very flat alongside your body with proper leather.

I have the Kimber Pre Series II Compact. It is a very reliable handgun. It's a great CCW, althought the takedown is a little strange. I prefer the real 1911 types over the flared barrels used on the Compact and the Pro Carry.

I own a pre series II aluminum stainless and really like it. I was looking for a summer gun (light and stainless and concealeable) and worked in a gun shop at the time. It came in trade and was the right price so I bought it and took it to the range.
It redefined my opinions of all Kimbers, which up to that time I thought were overrated...Accuracy was superb, function perfect, size seemed just right.
I currently own two EGW built Commanders and a Smith and Wesson CQB. I have owned many Commanders, two Springfield Champions (Detonics and Paras too).

I think the Champion is too heavy; mine were flawless in function, but I've heard others had problems. The other salesman at the Gun shop carried a Springfield and swore by it (5") tho.

I like the 41/4 barrel length of the Commander; S&W 1911 SC being what I'd choose if I wasn't happy with the KImber.

If I were going to do anything to mine, it would be pretty simple: 30 LPI the front strap, night sights, Wolff springs (done) Ed Brown beavertail, though I never seem to want to let it out of my sight long enough to have it done.

The pre series II gun in my opinion is superior to what comes after. As its a little rare, you have another reason to buy it. TF

Definitely consider the SW commander size 1911s. They are some of the best bang for buck pistols around. I carry the SW 4.25" Scandium. Its all of 28oz empty. They dont make the Scandium anymore but they can still be found. Also look at the SW 1911PD commander as well if you dont care about the weight.

Kimber Pro Carry II, 2200 rds fired, 100% reliable out of the box. Only problem I ever had was with mags, went to Wilson 47Ds and cured that problem. :D

I thought the SW1911PD was scandium.......

Yep, it's scandium......And an excellent choice.......

Don't forget the Dan Wesson CBOB. Very well put together and they can be had for around $800 and it's a series 70 type gun to boot.
