I am looking for a stainless 1911 around $750 tops. Based on my limited research, there only appear to be a few players.

Springfield Milspec or Loaded (which may be out of my range)
Taurus PT1911 - Not sure of the quality
Rock Island/Armscor - very hard to fine

First, are there any others I am missing? I am leanign towards the SF becuase I like the company, they seem available, however I am torn between a Milspec and a Loaded and cannot seem to make my mind up.

The taurus has my attentions becuase they offer a Rail which seems like it would be handy, But I am jsut not sure if I can trust their history.

THe Rosk Island, would be very hard to find.

Can anyone suggest any others??? I am sure the Milspec/Loaded has been posed before,m any Ideas on how to make a decision?

I have a Rock Island that is military finished and the quality isn't great-lots of slop in the slide to frame. I did just order a Taurus in stainless because of the good things I have heard about them. I can't wait to receive it and put it through it's paces. I found it new on Gunbroker for $599.00 as a "buy-it-now" and liked the price. It doesn't have the lower rail you described but I didn't want that option.

The Springfield MilSpec has a few options that I consider useful, most notably a decent set of sights in place of the GI humps. It's a solid pistol that has few faults, and none that are not readily corrected.

Between the Taurus and the Springfield, I'd take the Springer.

There are Kimber haters in here, but several years ago I paid $630 NIB for my Kimber Custom II, it's the best handgun I have ever owned, BY FAR.

My dad has a Mil-spec, I steered him that way to get him a pistol to start with. It's a good one to have to customize later.

If I were looking for one today, I would look very hard at the STI Spartan.

Has anyone else had that experience? I see parked RIA's in GB for $385 that includes shipping! I'm thinking of getting one or two. To be honest one reason I haven't carried any of my 1911's is because they are too great looking to treat that roughly, which is one reason I carry a Kel-Tec, I don't care what happens to it.
Maybe an RIA would be a good carry gun. I didn't know they ever made a stainless RIA.

For the OP. You may want to look at the Loaded models unless you plan on customizing later. I suggest this because of the configuration of the grip safety, it will point a better and be more comfortable to shoot in longer shooting sessions. Throw in the better sights, different triggers, etc. and it is a nice pistol.

Knowing what I know now after fooling with 1911's for some time... I'd pop for the Spartan as my first 1911. I think that is the best deal going when its manufacture and vintage is taken into account.

Used? Heck, I saw a new one two days ago, stainless 1991 NIB from the dealer for $770.

Colts are the best value in 1911s if you have more than $500 to spend in my opinion. And unlike the guns you mentioned, American made. That adds both real value and real quality.

........I just picked up a two year old LNIB Stainless 1991a Government with the original papers and a spare Colt Mag for $500. The dealer came down from $549. It had probably a box of shells thru it and not a mark on it. Great gun for the money. Some snibble about the trigger safety, but the majority of folks cannot tell the difference. Iffin you gonna spend $750, I'd look at Colt first.

Be patient, and check some of the auction sites. There are a lot of pistols out there running $600 to $800 bucks, both new and used.
