I just got a call from my nephew, who is thinking about buying a 1911 from a guy he works with, he said it's a "1911 mod. A" made by Griffin. I told him that its ether a cheep knock off or a very rare gun because I have never heard of it.

dose anyone know what it may be?

Griffons are made by a company in South Africa. You can get more info here. I haven't handled one, so I can't give you an opinion, but the web opinion seems to be about the same as you'd get for any other relatively inexpensive foreign-made 1911 (Norinco, Rock Island, etc) - that is to say all over the board.

I bought one a long while back. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but it seemed to be a well made pistol. No machining marks, nice clean bright blue, felt good in the hand, more like a steel Commander then a full size model.

Yep, the link looks like the people I bought mine from except I seem to recall paying about $325.00; as I said it was probably 10 years ago. For what it's worth, the small arms(and large weapons) industries in SA have always been builders of very highly rated products.

Griffon

I have one and love it although the night sights are dead.
No MIM or Cast parts, spring steel extractor, good workmanship, forged frame and slide.

Saw one on Gunbroker earlier this year, did a little reasearch and would have bought it if I had the extra money at the time. Everything I saw about them seemed to indicate that they are pretty well made.

Only thing I wonder about is the porting on them.........

If I stumbled across one for the right price, I'd take the chance and buy it
