Depress the follower with a paint stir stick, slip a nail into a witness slot and flip it upside down. The follower can be angled out then spring tension released (pointed in a safe direction) and removed through the top. That's how.

Or the previous owner may have participated in one of the gun games, where dropping the ejected magazine on the ground when reloading is considered good manners...
Do that often enough and you get to be a supporter of the aftermarket magazine vendors, who, oddly enough, are often sponsors of these games. Kind of makes you wonder where some of these rules come from...
Maybe, but it must take a long time (or cheap mags). I've dropped mags on concrete, grass, rocks, sand, mud, you name it. I've had to hose down mags so I could reload them for the next stage (finally got smart and bought enough to shoot through a match). Over the years I've had magazine failures, but I cannot absolutely pin a single failure on being dropped.

Push the follower down and slip a small pin through the round count hole, then the follower will shake loose and the spring will come out

shoot safe, shoot straight, and have fun

There are actually several styles of 1911 magazine and some like ACT magazines do have a removable base for cleaning while others will require the process I mentioned (post #26). Note the different springs used by different manufacturers in the second and third photos and how ordering correct springs is important. Any Colt magazines will be stamped with the initial of the OEM contract provider such as C for Checkmate or M for Metalform. Hope that clears things up for folks.

I use Wilson Combat for my Colt Commander.

My other mags (manuf. name escapes me at the moment) I just ordered some Pachmeyer followers for.

also, make sure the spring is in the right way, that could do it.
