always been a Colt man, but looking for variety -
are there a lot of SIG and S&W 1911 shooters here?
just between these two please, preferences?

Dan Wesson..... right now they are some of the nicest production 1911s on the market. Most can be had for under $1000.

They have no MIM. 70 series patterned guns and they use premium parts like Ed Brown....

The CBOB is sweet. For a little nicer gun look at the Valor.

I used to own a Sig GSR. Good gun but it was a little boxy in the slide. Hard to find holsters for it.
 
Sitck with Colt. You cant go wrong with them. You should ditch the sig idea and support American gun industry and buy American.

Kimber, Colt or S&W.

No Springfield, they are made on Brazil alongside of Taurus
 
Right now the only 2 brands of 1911 I own is Colt & Dan Wesson -- the DW product is just plain nice ;)

I have a S&W and a Dan Wesson and both are very high-quality 1911s. The fit & finish on the DW are on a par with any I've held and shot - including the Colt Gold Cup I had.

The S&W while not a "purist" 1911 (external extractor) is a boringly reliable gun that's very accurate. You couldn't go wrong with either of these.

I've had friends with the Sig 1911s and some loved them and some hated them - no direct experience myself.

As for buying American - why? If an American company can provide a quality product and a fair price then by all means I support them. I refuse to support any company that must rely on the "loyalty" of Americans to stay afloat. I would walk before I ever bought a vehicle from General Motors or Chrysler but it doesn't matter as they're getting my money anyway - and I receive absolutely nothing in return.

If you think these American companies buy American themselves you're just deluding yourself. They outsource to the cheapest suppliers they can find, always have and always will. I've served my country for going on 30 years and I don't need to buy American to prove anything to anybody - and I resent being told I should... (rant off)

Both Sig and the S&W are not 'true' 1911 pattern pistols, in that both use an external extractor.

I won't have either.

I have no desire to have a 1911 for which I can only turn to the manufacturer for parts.
 
I have a SIG 5" SS 1911, DW CBOB and Valor.

The DW's are superb guns and traditional 1911's. However, don't let the purists turn you off SIG. That was my first 1911 and I will keep it forever. Big heavy (40.6 Oz) and it soaks up recoil. Extremely reliable with good ammo.

I also have a S&W 645 which is a tank of a 45. Why not try something different?

I say you should have a SIG BECAUSE they are different. Variety is the spice of life.

Of the two that you listed, I've always found the SIG 1911 to be a better looking and feeling gun. There's just something about the S&W that just turns me off. I think I look at the S&W 1911 and see something hastily put together so that they could branch out into the 1911 market. The quality of their 1911 doesn't really compare to the quality that they put into their revolvers. That's just my take on it though.

Since you only asked about those two particular models, I won't comment on anything but those.

No problem. Are there any particular reasons that you're only considering the S&W and SIG models?
 
I have 3 Sig 1911's and one S&W. They're all great shooters, all reliable and accurate. I prefer the Sigs though, they're just a bit tighter and feel more substantial in hand. I can squeeze a bit more accuracy out of my Sig 5" target, but that's likely because the sights are better than on the S&W 5". I also like the looks of the Sig slide, I have plenty of 'traditional' looking 1911's ... it's nice to have something just a bit different. I completely strip almost every gun I own purely out of curiosity, and certainly every 1911 since it's so easy. I have to say the guts of the Sigs are impressive, high quality pieces used throughout and fit well. The only problem I've had was a tight throat on one of the Sigs that wouldn't chamber reloads ... then I realized my Lee FCD was putting a burr on the crimp. Polished the inside of my FCD, now reloads chamber fine in the tight throat.

I wish companies would stop using S80 firing pin safety setups on 5" guns though. If they want to use that system, why not only use it on guns that are intended for carry?
 
of the two you list, i guess i'd choose S&W, but i'm not really a fan of the external extractors.

for my money, i'd go dan wesson. the CBOB is very nice. i'm also interested in adding an STI at some point, but i haven't gotten to inspect one in person yet.

Blah Blah Blah... lets get picky and snooty about it. Schwartz safety, plunger safety, ambi guns etc.... You could say most of the 1911's on the market are not "true" 1911s. I personally love the tone..... :barf:

If you don't like the external extractor fine. Say that but the purist stuff is lame IMHO.

yep, simple really - I have 21 1911's, most of which are .45, although not all; I wanted something new and wondered about these two.....
 
The Smith 1911's are nice guns BUT S&W persists in plastering their stupid nannywarningreminder right on their pistol and I cannot abide that AT ALL.

I've never really seen the point of a Sig 1911 when they've got the wonderful .45 ACP Model P220. I own a P220 and it was a revelation to a guy who owns 26 1911 pistols including mostly Colts of assorted models and variations as well as two Dan Wessons, an Ithaca, two Kimber first series models, and a Remington Rand. Two of my Colts are 9mm Commanders - one a lightweight Commander, the other a Combat Commander.

I like the DA/SA and I like the decocker too of the P220 and think that my next .45 acp pistol may well be a carry version of that pistol.

I'm probably just a big fan of the .45 acp cartridge.

I like the P220 as well, krs, even the P245, but I think I would like the SIG or S&W as a "horse of a different color" trial, who knows.....by the way, I am told that S&W makes the frame for the SIG; any truth to that ?
 
I have a S&W 1911 5" Bbl. Stainless Steel, .45 ACP
it's never had an FTE, FWIW. Accurate and most S&Ws
run fine out of the box.

I have no experience with a Sig 1911 but the forged internal
parts sound like a nice spec. I like the Sig 1911 version that is
Commander/4 1/4" length Barrel SLide, on the Officers frame.
Now, S&W just came out with their's the Compact ES. I will say
Sig has one of the better web sites for looking at all
models and specs.

I'll probably go with a Colt Goverment Model 70 Series
re-issue for the next 1911 as a model more like the ones
I carried back in the Day/USN.

The Dan Wesson's sure get a lot of thumbs up, and not
many complaints I've found. Perhaps a 10MM DW some
day.

I have a parkerized Springfield Armory full size "Loaded Series". That's a nice gun. Shoots great and very high quality. Also have a 4" stainless on order.
 
and I have a Marlin over/under 12 ga., but what has that to do with Smith vs. SIG ?
