I just ordered a new GI style guide rod (currently has a FLGR) and plug from Brownells today for my Kimber Custom II. I read somewhere that some people will just go without a guide rod in 1911's. So I took out my guide rod and put it all back together. When I racked the slide the spring made a crunching sound. So now I am wondering if when I put in the GI rod if it will do the same thing. Anyone have any thoughts???

That crunching sound was the spring binding...it shouldn't do that with a GI rod. The spring will compress in a straight line as long as it gets started straight, thats what the GI guide rod does.

My 1911 has never had anything but a GI guide rod in it...its smooth as silk. (no crunching)

The spring has very little room to do anything but compress into a straight column. So, the guide rod only need be the GI minimum to make sure it stays stacked straight.

I just traded out the 2 piece FLGR in my Springfield Armory Loaded 1911 for a GI style and solid plug. After one range trip, no issues whatsoever.

FLGR's only make money for the manufacturers and do absolutely nothing for your 1911. The same thing with those nylon bushings sold to put on the GI guide rod, they do nothing and can actually impede the action's recycling. If either were needed, Mr. Browing would have installed it originally.

Thanks for the replies. They came today and works like a charm!!!!! Big props to Brownells for fast shipping! I put the order in at 2pm yesterday and they showed up in the mail today!!! Granted, Brownells is only 75 miles away. But still impressed.
