What would be a good repleacement sight for a SA GI 1911...off a rest past 7 yards it shoots low...i know one solution for shooting low is filing down the front sight...and i am not exactly sure about that...i thought a cleaner solution would be raising the rear sight...any thoughts?

What loads are you using? Try different loads, going to a heavier bullet will raise the point of impact in a pistol.

Do you have a flat or arched mainspring housing? The arched mainspring housing has a tendency to raise the muzzle...

**Edited to add**

When firing try to align the slide so that it's in a straight line with the bones in your forearm. I was constantly hitting low with my Government model untill I tried this.

The Bomar BCMS adjustable rear sight fits a GI type rear sight cut...protrudes a bit but it's adjustable! Works just fine for Bullseye!

See: www.bo-mar.com

Happy shooting!

added---stick with a flat MSH. A bullseye gunsmith said it best, flat MSH unless you can palm a basketball.

What is the gun for?
How far off is it at some specific range?

There are a lot of reports of Springfields shooting low, too many to be accounted for by bad technique or mainspring housings. I think they have slipped on a dimension somewhere.

Jim off a rest at 10yrds it is 4" low and off a rest at 7yrds while covering the target with the sight POA = POI

4 inches at 10 yards calls for a sight change of about .075". That is over a sixteenth of an inch, which is more than it might sound like on a gunsight. That would about wipe out the front so you need a taller rear. I don't have one to compare, but the sights on a Mil-Spec are taller than on the GI and that rear might be enough taller.

Otherwise, a set of King's and some drifting and filing or an adjustable rear and a front tall enough to work with it would be required.

Contact Springfield. That is a large error and they might fix it at no charge.

I have small hands, I had absolutely no problem with the arched MSH and short trigger.

so then what would a best fit option be for a replacement rear adjustable sight as i really dont want to cut into the slide...and could one still use the original front sight?

well a fellow from Brownells responded to one of my emails (they say it can take 72hrs for a responed) and said that the range of adjustment for the sight that jim suggested is about .037" that is about half of the total ajustment needed...looks like i had better hit the range and make sure i have hard numbers...

SA GI sights...

Had the same problem...

Lightened the heavy trigger pull and added a longer one.

No more problem;

Took hammer ledge down to .0021"---- and added a longer Caspian speed flat faced trigger---my finger was not contacting it a the right place when I pulled the trigger.

if you're the original owner you should call up springfield(1-800-680-6866) and get it repaired under warranty. have them pick up the shipping cost as well.
