I was showing a guy a 1911 this morning, and after clearing it, he saw me ride the hammer down. He was shocked, and he claimed that I should just let the hammer drop. He claims that riding it down "wears the sear out."

He couldn't explain how it does so. I asked for clarification, but he couldn't elaborate.

Anyone know where he might get such an idea?

If the trigger is not pulled fully while lowering the hammer the half cock notch will hit the sear. So either press the trigger all the way to the back wile lowering the hammer or dry fire it.

I figured as much. Old guy with long, stringy hair and 3" fingernails. He looked like he just walked out of an Asian opium den.

We emphatically asked him to explain this, as we own tons of 1911s, and none of us had heard of it before.
