I've seen several 1911 guns for sale with a 6" barrel instead of the traditional 5". I've never shot one and wondered what the advantages of a 6" barrle are. Does the longer barrel reduce the felt recoil of the gun? Is the gun good for competition, like bowling pins, action pistol? Or is the gun better suited for something like bullseye shooting?

It's called a longslide. The advantages of a longer barrel are;

1. It looks better.

2. Increased bullet velocity.

3. Increased sight radius for a better sight picture.

4. Reduced recoil.

They may debate #1 and 4 but the rest is gospel.

If you are in the market for a long slide go take a look at Fusion Firearms and Caspian Arms. Caspian makes a slide that can fit to a full size frame if you want a long-slide on the cheap. They also put the roll mark in the correct place (behind the rear serrations ala Colt and not with the writing on the slide ala Robo-Cop.)
