I find it interesting that a 100 year old design virtually unchanged still commands such respect and loyalty. I would count myself among the fans, I carried one as a duty pistol for years, don't currently own one mostly because of the inflated prices. Remember that was designed not too long after cap and ball blackpowder pistols were what folks used.

Not unusual at all. There are many designs that predate the 1911 that are still highly respected and doing hard duty.

Examples are:

'98 Mauser.
Model 94 Winchester
Ruger single-shot rifles. (Sharps falling block)
Single-action revolvers.
Straight blowback autopistols

Even the "modern" Beretta 92 Series can be traced back to the Walther P38.
Doublestack 9mm? Browning's Grande Rendement.

The Glocks and the Sigs have Browning's fingerprints all over them. At the heart of those pistols is the Colt-Browning tilt barrel/locked breech/short recoil system.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Some inventio0nes can't be made better than the original design, other than mior differences and up grades. The 1911 Platform was so good initially, it is hard to make too much better.

The reasons you're seeking are:
1 - ergonomics
2 - modularity

And the "current inflated prices" are mostly on the silly non-JMB/GI spec guns, look for a plain-jane Philippines model (RIA/Citadel) and they get down to or under the $500 range.
