So i'm thinking of buying a 1911 in the near future, however I do not know too much about companies that make them, or how reliable they are.

I know there's Colt, RIA, Springfield, Taurus (do not want), and many more I just do not know about. So please add your input about companies, reliability, and price.

I'm trying not to go over probably 650-700.

Thank you all :D

Oh jesus, did not "search" enter your mind? "Search" is a great thing. Now you are going to hear a multitude of derivative arguments. Just do it.

There is a 1911 maker behind every tree now of days. The Colt is the 1911 of my choice, after that it's SA, the rest are just new kids on the block. orchidhunter

Yes, get either the Colt Series 80 or 70. They are solid guns. Then, you can customize them to your liking.

SA is another solid choice. You'll spend a little less then use the money to customize the gun to your liking.

I breif scrolling through of the first few pages of this category will give you a wealth of knowledge on 1911s. Most every question you can think of has been asked and answered before somewhere on here.

Well, you did a wonderful job of helping this person around. Maybe they are looking for firsthand experiences that weren't found by the search engine? Perhaps we should just all search and never make a new thread, that would be great, wouldnt it? Geez.

To the OP colt and springfield both make a good 1911. The RIA is a good entry level gun, if you want to learn the in and out of a 1911 and handling. The downside is they use cast slides and frames, although I have yet to hear of a failure myself. The taurus has lots of naysayers, most of them have never even handled the gun. I have one myself that has operated flawlessly.

I think colts are overrated, and you'll definitly pay the extra money for the "true" 1911, the colt. I don't think they are bad in any way, shape, or form, but I do think that the price tag is not merely reflecting the quality or workmanship but the name recognition. You can find some very nice 1911's in either SA or Kimber for similar or less money. Buy used if the price tag for new is still too high for you.

If you're not gonna get a colt, then get RIA tactical. Its cheap and comes with all the bells and whistles already. Other than that, go for the gusto, AKA Colt

Im kinda partial to Dan Wesson 1911's myself. Id look for a used one of these, thats just me though. If not a DW I'd go with a Springer Mil Spec or GI. Can get them for a good price at Whittaker guns. STI Spartan is also good in your range.

Sorry to be rude, but how many times can this question be asked?

There must be 1000's of pages if you search!

dont forget to post a range trip and review when you get one!
and you will, the 1911 monster will get you now, or later, of this you can be certain.

heck, a 1.5 years ago I had no interest in handguns at all.
now I can't wait to get a 1911 and play from dawn till dusk. funds accepting.

First of all what are you using the gun for???

Range Toys? Gun Games? Home defense or carry?

I think that there are different tools for different jobs. 1911's are no different. So the first question is what are you going to use the gun for?

Here are some general thoughts

I personally think that the first 1911 should be a quality gun that is basic and stock. This allows you to shoot the 1911 as close to as JMB intended it to be.

After 500 rounds or so you should have a feel for the gun. After 1000 you should know exactly what you like about it exactly what you don't. From there you can modify your base gun to fit YOUR personal and subjective needs.

If you buy a cheap factory tricked out low end gun like the Taurus or an RIA tactical you will never have a feel for the real 1911.

Remember that this is more than likely only your first 1911. If you like it you want something that will sell, quickly and for only a small loss COLT. IF you fall in love with the platform it will simply be the first of many. :)

SA Loaded model. Has enough upgrades for the first-timer M1911 owner at a decent price. Better finished than RIA.

ps. You really should use the "Search" function.

I really do not understand the love for production line "fake" semi custom 1911s....

It seems like a waste to me. The beauty of the 1911 platform is that you can make a personal firearm that is made to your exact spec.....When you buy and off the shelf you miss out on a lot of what makes the 1911 special IMHO...

That is not to say I do not own a few. I do... I like and own a DW, have owned a Sig GSR, More Colts than I can count (the new Colt CNC machined pistols look pretty good.) but to me the best thing to do is get a based gun and build it how you want it to be.

If you really want to learn the 1911 inside and out buy a gunsmithing book or two (midway has a few 1911 specific ones)

Then get yourself a Caspian matched frame and slide for about 400 or so and build your own 1911.
