Right now, the best buy out there in a new .44M is the 50TH Blackhawk Flattop from CDNN. I just bougt one and it was under $400 shipped. It will shoot about thing you want through it as well as .44 Specials. All in all, a very good choice to see how you like the .44M.

I love the .44Magnum and have several. By far my favorites are Ruger Bisleys, both customs.

A 4 5/8" Super converted to Bisley, among other things:

A standard .44 Bisley that mainly needed a taller front sight but got gussied up a little in the process:

I also have a couple of S&W .44Mag's that are wonderful shooters. A 6" 29-3 and a 629MG but unfortunately, no pics.

I do not own a .44 magnum and I am not a hunter. My friend is a deer hunter. He is also very knowledgeable about weapons and owns many. For what it's worth, he uses a Ruger Redhawk.

Defense = 629. Useful in fast reloads, serious Dirty Harry appeal, very popular in metallic target shooting at one time. Much lighter than the other 2.

Purpose Built Hunting = Ruger Super Blackhawk HUNTER model, comes with rings already, great sights and trigger, heavy barrel. Single action only.

Knock around belt gun that can do both = Ruger Redhawk, it's heavy for a carry gun, built like a tank and on par with SBH for durability, chances are you wouldn't be taking double action shots on deer, but you could.

you might take a look at a taurus raging bull. I think they're ported and I hear good things about the ribbed grip. personally I haven't used one, and taurus has a spotty reputation with some folks, but my small sample size has been A+. you might find a used one at an attractive price.

But 44mag in a pistol is too much for me anyway.
I just picked one up a month or so ago, blued 6.5 in barrel. As far as the porting, I don't recall the muzzle rise being an issue. The grips are great, if you shoot several rounds you're gonna eventually feel it, but all in all, I'm very pleased with it. I had been looking for a GP-100 and stumbled across my Raging Bull on GB with a $400 buy now price. there was nothing to think about. In the future i would still like to get a GP-100 though.

I have.... ummm .... eleven 44 mags. So here are my favorites in order:

  • Dan Wesson - If you can find a good used one, they are top of the line. Easiest to shoot, most flexible, durable.
  • S&W - Model 29/629 - Prettiest of the bunch. My choice of a new purchase. They are the lightest and therefore can be a handful when shooting full power loads. Man are they fast to point and great to carry hunting.
  • Ruger Blackhawk/Redhawk/whichever... Built like a tank will never let you down and can be used as a hammer and axe to build a cabin in the woods.

Find one that fits your hand and you like to shoot. That makes more difference than any thing else.

I voted Ruger even though I've not owned one ..... yet... but the reputation for durability influenced my vote. I have a pair of 629s that are both great guns and have had a couple of 29s come and go that were also top notch. You really can't go wrong either way.

I thing to think about ,if you stand hunt in the open like a climber, lock on, or ladder stand deer do sometime just appear by your stand and cocking a single action can chase the deer off. That is one reason a DA revolver is better also for any bear or big cat potection you might get several shoots of,maybe.

I've never spooked a deer cocking a single action. Hell, I've had them just appear right after getting into my stand, while I was loading my Winchester 1895, which sounds like shaking a beer can full of pebbles. You never want to shoot at deer double action mode anyway.

I have shot a hog directly under my stand DA while deer hunting. Young and dumb deer my not know the difference in loading or cocking a gun but them old does and old bucks out side of the rutt can be some jumpy darn animals. Heck i like to see how much movement i can get away with sometimes. It does matter how well that DA pulls of course. And pratice helps. Just don't tell someone they can't or should never do it. If you can't hit a deer at 30 feet or less then you have no skills with a hand gun.

If you want to go for brute strength, get a Redhawk. Having said that nothing feels better in your hand than a Smith 29 or 629.
