Today is the opening day of the NY Northern Zone Deer season. Got up bright and early and headed out, was sitting at my spot on a ridge by 7:11. On the trek out I had to cross a small creek that feeds a swamp, at one point there is a makeshift bridge that consists of nothing more than a length of 2x4. I got about 3/4 the way across and dang near fell in the drink:uhoh: That made for a interesting moment as I waited to feel the wet sensation on my leg. Fortunatley the water didn't go above my alpha burly's. At 9:00 a small yearling came out of what I have been thinking was the deers bedding area and before I know it she is a mere 20 yards away. Thankfully she didn't notice me and continued on her way down the ridge looking for some vittles. I knew that there would be another not to far behind her and sure enough there was a mature doe starring at me from where the yearling came.

As soon as I turned my head in that direction she started to stomp and turkey neck trying to get a better line of sight on me through the sapplings that were between us. She move a little and put more trees between us which gave me the ability to turn a little to face her, in the process I got my H&R 20GA single shot up and eared back the hammer. She stepped out from behind the safety of the trees 30 yards away, I placed the bead on her and launced a Winchester 3/4 oz. slug. At the shot she dropped like a sack of tatters as the slug hit her in the neck. I quickly reloaded and walked up to her said a quick prayer thanking her for the meat she was providing me and gave her a coup de' grace with 158gr SWC from my S&W M10. I'm glad I brought the M10 I almost left it at the house. At the shot she was still. I used my Mora Bushcraft Black which I've had for over a year now and was amazed the entire time field dressing her. What a great knife it is by far the best I've ever spent my money.

I was really hoping that my wife would be able to go with me today so she could got her first deer, But she was up since early this morning sick. There is still plenty of season left though and I know she will fill a tag. I hope the rest of you have a successful and safe season as well.
