Hi I recently bought a my first gun... a Glock 20SF. I bought it at a gun show so the gun was out on top of a Glock box. All the guns were displayed like this. The dealer told me that it was brand new. My question is in the Glock case there is a little manilla envelope with the Glock address on it, inside the envelope is two empty shell casings. (1).Why are these two casings in the case. (2)Do all Glocks/Guns come like this (with shell casings) as far as I can tell the envelope is from Glock.

Some states require a spent case for their data base records so they can use it to match cases at a crime scenes to the legally purchsed handguns, ala CSI. Of course you see the issue here: that legally purchased part + crime scene are very rare and ignore the fact firing pins, exractors, etc. are replacable.

Yes every handgun I've purchased in the past couple years has had atleast one spent case.

You got a 10 mike mike for your first firearm? Bold!

Though these days the cost of 10mm is more painful than the recoil. You may want to think about handloading that one.

I don't think any states require that......have you got any idea where you got that idea?

I'd like to know if such a thing is really happening anywhere.

New York requires it for new handguns. I think Maryland does it too--I don't know who else. The dealer is supposed to send the spent case in to the state police. If it's still there in the case, either your state doesn't require it or the dealer forgot.

Not all manufacturers include the spent case. If they don't, the dealer has to provide it, which can get to be a hassle if the dealer doesn't have ready access to a range. Needless to say, dealers in NY will charge extra for that.

The "spent case database" has cost the state $6.5 million so far and hasn't solved a single crime--it was used in two cases, and neither one resulted in a conviction. So what's the answer? Microstamping! :barf:

New York, huh?

Thanks.

Maybe the answer is already coming with budget cuts. They won't have the personnel for useless tasks like filing spent cases.

The game, welcome to the forum, congratulations on buying your first gun, it should last you a good long time. Of course, hopefully you'll buy more before it wears out...:)
