atek3 and I went to a 2-gun (rifle + shotgun) match yesterday. We were both in the "heavy metal" division: .308 w/ iron sights and 12-gauge pump. I was using a M14 clone, and atek had another black 308 MBR. We were sharing a Mossberg 590. More on the shotgun later. The match had six stages:

Stage 1 started with performing Mozambique drills on IPSC targets at 50 yards, done standing and aiming through a narrow break in a barracade. There no-shoot targets in front of and above the targets, so the chest area was not much bigger than the head. Then it was and run up and engage steel poppers with the shottie.

Stages 2 and 3 were an el presidente done with rifles and slugs, respectively: 3 targets at 15 yards, shoot each twice, reload, shoot twice again. The .308 was a big disadvantage against the guys with compensated ARs. I also learned you can't insert a full M14 mag on a closed bolt.

Our shotgun went tango uniform on stage 4, forcing atek3 to take a DNF. It failed to extract a shell after rigorous racking, and the front sight bead also fell off. One of the other shooters graciously let us use his pump for stage 5.

Stage 5 was my favorite, and started out with engaging steel poppers and clay birds on posts, then switching to rifle to take out IPSC targets at close-quarters. Lots of barracades.

The last stage was very frustrating. There were 3 steel targets on the 200 yard line. Starting standing at 150 yards, prone out and shoot each target, then run to the 125 yard mark and repeat, then again at 75 yards. 2 minute time limit and as many rounds as you need. Of course the targets were only 6", they were hard to see in the shade, and each time you fired you kicked up dust obscuring your view...

General thoughts: It was a real blast and very challenging. Even though most people were using optics, I didn't feel disadvantaged relying on irons. I'm a complete noob with the shotgun and almost lost my footing a few times since I was shooting it like a rifle offhand. Evidently this was the source of some good-natured amusement with the other shooters.

atek3, anything to add?

What I really enjoy about matches is only next to actual fighting do you learn what junk works and what junk doesn't.

What worked:
The Rifle- Very Reliable and Accurate

What didn't
my shooting glasses- with a scratch where the rear sight was, I couldn't see during stage one which really hurt me on the mozambique drills.

my sunglasses- my back up sunglasses were so dark, that I literally couldn't see the 6" flashers at 150 yds. (and 75 yd. for that matter), I had do aim 'roughly where i thought they should be'.

my shotgun shell pouch- I need to get dedicated shell holders so I'm not fumbling for rounds when i shoot it dry

my bird shot- Using no-name corroded ammo, didn't lend itself to reliablility. twice in one stage expired hulls got lodged in the chamber and couldn't be extracted :(

my shotgun- We borrowed my friends mossberg persuader, the bead front sight was high, so in the shotgun vice-pres I aimed COM and got mostly headshots  (b-zone ) . On a later stage, the front sight bead got unscrewed and was lost :(

The worst part of the match was when I fired twenty rifle rounds on the first stage. I did pretty well, except one foot was outside the box and I got TWENTY procedurals :( Oh well maybe nextime.

this sounds like a lot of whining, but really i had a good time. :)

the guy two in front of me in the squad made the same mistake, I should have paid a little more attention.
