DAYTON, Ohio --

Two officers were shot late Sunday night after gunfire was exchanged trying to arrest a robbery suspect around 11 p.m.

Authorities said a Trotwood resident called and reported a home burglary. Two officers went to the home to take the robbery report.

Investigators said one officer stayed to take the report while the other officer left to search for the described vehicle.

Moments later, a Trotwood officer and Montgomery County Sheriff Deputy Jon Miller spotted the car in question at a Third Street convenience store. As the two officers approached the suspect in the car, he fired shots at them. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The suspect, Matthew Grimes fled the scene in a Trotwood cruiser and later crashed near Sinclair Community College. He then fired several shots at Dayton police officers. They in return fired shots at Grimes, wounding him. He is recovering from his gunshot wounds at Miami Valley Hospital.

Two Miami Valley police officers are hospitalized after being shot during a gas station robbery.

It happened around 11:00 p.m. Sunday night at the intersection of Olive Road and West 3rd in Dayton.

An officer from Trotwood, as well as a Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy were shot in the incident. The suspects then stole a Trotwood cruiser.

Montgomery County Deputy John Miller and Officer Brent Rasor from Trotwood are both recovering today.

Information is hard to come by in this case.

All three of the principal players: the two officers who responded to the call and the suspect involved, all three were shot. They spent the night in the hospital under going surgery. They are all expected to be okay.

Detectives say it all started with a call-out in Trotwood on a home burglary.

The Trotwood officer stopped one suspect, Matthew Grimes, very close to the home that was burglarized just outside a gas mart. Still, everything happening in Trotwood.

This is where information starts getting fuzzy. According to police, the Trotwood officer patted down the suspect and put Grimes in the back of his cruiser. Soon a Montgomery County deputy arrived as back-up. Both officers went to take the suspect out of the cruiser to cuff him and that's when the suspect opened fire.

What's unclear at this point is how the suspect came to have a gun on him. Typically procedure is the officer patts down the suspect and take away any weapons and place him in back of the cruiser. It's unclear at this momnet how the officer missed the gun.

Trotwood Officer, Brent Rasor was struck by at least one bullet in the neck and Montgomery County Deputy, John Miller was struck in the jaw.

John Miller has been with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department for about a year.

Sheriff Vore says he is doing just fine. "One positive thing about it is last night when he came out of having all his tests and everything he was still in outstanding spirits. So there is a tremendous show of support from the Sheriff's office in the lobby area and the waiting areas and John was very appreciative of that. His family was very appreciative of that and he knew everyone was out there to support him."

Officer Rasor is reported doing fine.

Sheriff Vore said that after being hit Deputy Miller fired eight rounds at the suspect who was driving off in the Trotwood officer's cruiser.

When Matthew Grimes took off in the stolen cruiser, dozens of officers gave chase.

Police say they spotted Grimes on Germantown Street and started chasing him. Officers from all over the city joined the persuit.

Grimes crashed the cruiser into a poll, got out and started running. Dayton officers ran after him.

They spotted then a silver handgun in Grimes hand.

Lt. John Huber tells us what happened next.

"The officers were on foot running after the suspect and saw a handgun in his hand. When he turned one officer fired. The suspect went down but he had not stopped his aggresive act. He then turned on the ground and began to position himself to point the gun at the officers. They fired again."

Grimes was hit twice.

The Dayton Police officer who shot him is on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure.

Grimes is in the hospital under guard.

We understand he is going face attempted murder charges in Trotwood, feloneous assalt and failure to complie charges in Dayton.

Grimes was the only suspect in the shooting. But apparently there was another man maybe involved in the home burglary.

Trotwood officers say they have not arrested that man, but they do know who he is and hoping to make an arrest soon.
Officials are crediting the quick action of witnesses for helping save the lives of these two officers.

2News spoke with one woman who applied pressure to one of the officer's neck wounds until medics could arrive.

23 year old Sophia Pettit lives across the street from the gas station.

She was coming home late Sunday right as the shooting occurred.

She heard four or five shots ring out in the night air.

So she looked across the street and saw Deputy John Miller on the ground, yelling for the suspect to get out of his car.

Miller then shot out the windows of his cruiser as the suspect took off down West Third Street, toward downtown dayton.

Sophia ran over to help and saw that Miller was bleeding from the neck, so she went into the gas station to get a towel.

"I seen a white brand new shirt hanging behind him, I asked for it, he gave it to me, I ran out and applied pressure to the officer's neck. After that I stood there and waited and it took me a couple of minutes because I was so panicked about it, I looked over and saw another officer there, a Trotwood officer laying down, I seen blood coming from his stomach, which kinda topped the whole night like oh my god, it's nothing like you see on tv, it's more real when you're actually there."

Both Miller and Officer Brent Razor are at Miami Valley Hospital, recovering from their injuries.

We will hear more from Sophia, plus we'll have the latest on this police shooting coming up tonight on 2News First at Five.

Good to see someone render First-Aid, everyone should learn basic 1st Aid and keep current. The life you save may be your own, or family/friend.

The good news is that officer who was listed as "critical" has been upgraded to "serious" condition and is expected to continue to recover, the other officer's injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

On a side note, the BG is lucky to be alive. One thing you do not want is to have Dayton cops shooting at you. The tend not to miss, and the hits tend to be fatal...this is the third officer involved shooting by Dayton Police in the last couple of months...the other two BGs are both dead.
