CONGRESS – Medical personnel flew a Yavapai County man to John C. Lincoln North Hospital in Phoenix after an officer-related shooting Sunday afternoon near Congress.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bob Ticer, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man armed with a handgun and knife threatening suicide in the Congress area.

At approximately 4:10 p.m., two DPS officers and a DPS sergeant found the man on Highway 71 west of Congress. While they were speaking with him, he allegedly lifted the handgun toward the officers.

One of the DPS officers shot the suspect in the arm. The officers then tended to him for 20 minutes until medical personnel arrived.

No officers suffered injuries in the altercation.

The suspect, Justin Lee Montgomery, 23, moved to the area from California in the past week. He is in serious condition at John C. Lincoln North with a non-life threatening injury.

YCSO has asked the DPS Major Crimes Unit based in Phoenix to handle the investigation.

It'll be interesting to see what he does when released from the hospital. I suspect there'll be no shortage of lawyers pounding on his door...

The most amazing thing about this to me is that Bob Ticer is still working the road. He'd been with DPS for a long time when I was hired by YCSO in '74!
