Hi,

This summer we're going to NC, the Ashland area, for a week followed by 1 week in at Newport News VA for a WWII camp for our son. I'm thinking of taking my M&P 340 for CC, the Buckmark for plinking and a SUB2000 for a plinker and defensive rifle. I have a NYS unrestricted pistol permit, and UT, NH, PA and ME CC permits as well, so I think that I'm covered in the CC area (at least according to the NC AG's website).

In your estimation, am I overdoing it? I have other firearms but these seem to be the easiest to carry and have fun with, if the opportunity arises.

Your opinion is appreciated.

haha no such thing as to much, as long as you're doing it legally. I know guys that drive around with a Mossberg 590 and M4 in the trunk, M&P9 in the glove box, M&P.45 on their hip and a P3at in their wallet pocket every day... I'm sure taking along a couple favorites in case you hit up a range won't be overdoing it. Unless the spouse keeps you from it!

Drew, thanks for the reply. Wife's ok with it but you got me thinking. I may add the 22/32 kit gun for the MRS.

How do you like that Sub2000 anyway? I was lookin into gettin one for a trunk gun, I already got a ton of glock mags and figured it'd be a good investment if it doesn't malfunction and has good accuracy out to 200 meters.

Cant go wrong. I participated in a practical rifle shoot a few weeks ago and did fine at all ranges. The magazine 'Gun Tests' just tested pistol caliber carbines at it was classified as'best buy' with a A - rating

If you have a big bore rifle that needs sighting in, maybe you should bring it along. C2 down in Pungo (technically Virginia Beach) has a very nice 300-yd facility for that, and it's reasonably priced.

No, I'm not on commission. I just like the place and want it to stay in business.

Yep, you're good to go. Just remember, no CC on places where posted, establishments that serve alcohol or any government building (parking lot is fine unless otherwise posted).

Effective December 1, 2011, North Carolina automatically recognizes concealed carry permits issued in any other state.

We recently got some positive changes...

A year ago, your concealed carry permit was trumped by the NC Wildlife Commission. A year ago, we couldn't conceal carry on game lands or fish hatcheries. Things changed for the positive as you can see in my link. You still can't open carry on a boat dock, really not sure why. Still, make sure you're not on one of the exempted game lands where conceal carry is prohibited.

If you need offices to call, pm me and I'll point you to the right agency...but I'd recommend researching the law for yourself.

Good luck and enjoy your trip. :)

From what a Game Warden told me, it is mainly geared towards duck hunters. They dont want them having loaded shotguns on the boat ramps. Actually, best I can remember it says "no loaded firearms on a boat ramp" it dosent specify open carried firearms but I could be wrong.

Probably to help prevent all those awful boating accidents we hear about where guys lose all their guns overboard. ;)

I have to print out this thread for the great info. I dont have much time to respond tonight due to work. Thanks loads. What's in NewportNews that would cause you to bring everything?

I'd try for ammunition compatibility as much as possible to make the trip more economical.

You should ask bikerdoc about ranges near Newport News.

Make sure to stop in Ashland, VA just north of Richmond and check out Green Top. Plan for 2+ hours at that stop, it is without a doubt one of the biggest gun stores in the state. I personally will drive out there if there is a used gun I am looking for and its a 5 hour drive one way.

Newport News a.k.a. Bad Newz, the place that whelped Michael Vick isn't any worse than any other city. Just don't go driving around the Section 8 housing in the wee hours of the morning trying to score drugs and the chances of you running afoul of the local nogoodnicks are faint. I'm right around the corner in Poquoson and teach in York county.
If you're in a shooting mood there's the A&P Arms in Norflok. In Newport News there's the Marksman which is a nice facility- 75 foot indoor but I'm not sure if they'll let you use the carbine. The Superior Gun and Pawn is a hole-in-the-wall joint which I'd skip.
Where is the WWII camp?
If you get a chance there are lots of museums in the area. You've got the Yorktown Victory Center/Visitor's center down by the riverfront. The Colonial Parkway is a beautiful drive and runs between Yorktown, Jamestown, and Williamsburg. The Virginia War Museum is by the James River. There's the Air and Space museum in Hampton. You can't throw a rock around here without hitting a museum or historic site.

I would bring the CC pistol and the second choice (for me) would be either the buckmark or sub2k / favoring the sub2 slightly.. more for that vacation may be too much

I lived in Boone for almost 5 years, and had never heard of Ashland, NC (they're about 40 minutes apart). Anyways, make sure you check the laws in TN b/c you will be close to that state as well.

Not sure I understand the vacation other than you appear to want to shoot guns. What are you going to do in the Richmond and Virginia Beach areas? Visit relatives? The camp? Are you participating in the WWII camp?

As little as possible.

For this place, your minimum handgun and no reloads, nothing extra. Pocket pistol preferred.

The flip side is if you plan to find ranges and shoot for fun. Then whatever you can carry :)

Shooting is the option. Personal defense is the main concern. The MP 340 so. I can pocket carry while hiking. Target shooting if the opportunity arises. My mistake, weare going to Candler, near Ashville, NC then to VA. All your input is appreciated. Thanks.
