I ought both a double barrel 20 and a Pump 12 Ga fo HD guns.
The 20 double was just too perfect to chop so it stayed stock but will still serve good duty protecting the home!
The 12 is a lot rougher looking, was a 30" bbl and got cut to 19 1/2" for a HD gun. Perfect size.
All I added was a recoil pad and nothing else. Nothing to hang-up around the home and nothing for a bad guy to grab either!
In my book simple is best. All the gizmos and buttons just get you sidetracked when your focus should be in ONE place!!!
Pumps seldom fail and can always throw an bad shell or empty well clear of the gun.
Maybe I am old fashoned and don;t get how well all these gizmos help you shoot but if and when I need to shoot, that is ALL I want to be doing! My focus is on the fight ahead and NOTHING else!
Think about it a whils and see if you don;t agree?
The gaquge choice is sort of immaterial because the fight will likely be at less than 25 ft and both gauges spread about the same. The 12 has a bigger payload but the 20 ga has 20 balls in each shell! 9 in the 12 ga shells.
Gosh I hope I never habe to face down a gunfight again. I have experienced one good one and you can't be more afraid, more intent on one thing, and trying your hardest to remember all the right things to do and hit your mark!
The idea is not to Kill but to stop it all!
If you ever go there, yu'll know what I mean...

I have a similar philosophy. KISS. I don't aim a shotgun so much as point it while I'm looking down the barrel/rib. I'm a wing shooter, so this is how I've learned to shoot a shotgun. Fit is extremely important to me, so for me, repeaters make the most sense unless I happen upon a double that fits. Doubles aren't as easy to shim for fit as repeaters. That said, I sure like my 20 gauge spartan coach gun.

12s ... for ME, are my waterfowl guns, except that I have a 10 gauge I really like on snow geese. My 20 does everything else from walking in the woods to doves to home defense. I to take along a certain old 12 gauge SxS though on my walks a lot. It's a little heavier than the 20 for walking, but I'm not usually walking that far. With dove loads, it's good squirrel medicine and with a slug or buckshot, the other barrel is reserved for hogs should I stumble upon one, or deer during deer season. Doubles are very versatile like that, good combination guns.
