5 round boxes used to be the standard size for all buckshot regardless of gun. 12ga is just more popular and "bulk packs" have caught on more for them.
It's always puzzled me too why #3's were the only size buckshot you ever see in 20ga. Can't complain - first deer I ever got I took with a 20ga single shot with #3 buck, but the ammo selection certainly is limited.
Way back in the dark ages when I was a kid, buckshot came in 25-round boxes also. My dad used to sell one shell at the time if that's what people wanted.
I don't shoot a lot of it, just keep it around for the coach gun, 3 buck Remington loads. I have never bought more than a couple 5 round boxes at a time. What I shoot most of is 7/8 ounce 7.5 shot in my 20 gauge...at doves. It does make a good bedside gun with 3 buck in it, though. I've got 12s, but the little 20 is a short, quick coach gun. I do have a SxS light 28" barrel 12 SxS, just don't see the need. 3 buck will ruin a home invader's day about as well, methinks and the little 20 is a handier length.
