Ok, so I ran across a really good deal on a youth model 20 gauge 870 express over the weekend in LNIB condition for $175. I have been looking for a 20 gauge for small game, dove, and maybe the occasional round of skeet. Anyway I bought it on impulse thinking I would just change the stock. After all an 870 is an 870 right? Now for reality, I didn't know that the 20 gauge was built on a smaller frame and that I couldn't just go and order any stock I wanted off of Brownell's, eBay, or wherever. So does anyone know where a 6 foot tall man might be able to find a wood stock that would fit this shotgun and him? I really kind of like the utilitarian look of the wood on the express but would buy a full set of walnut or laminate if I had to just no synthetic.

Put a slip on recoil pad on over the stock. It will add about an inch, maybe a bit more.

The 20ga butt stocks will interchange with the 740/742/7400/760/7600 rifles also. Boyds also has new stocks and forends in various shapes and wood materials.

So basically any 20 gauge Remington stock or the 2 peice rifle stocks will fit. That should help some. What about the stocks from smaller gauge shotguns?

Thought crossed my mind but I still don't think it would be long enough. May be able to make a spacer to go under the rubber of the recoil pad though.

The Youth Model stocks have a shorter LOP (13"). Any standard 20 ga. stock will fit, as long as it's for the adult size 20s built on the same frame size.

Funny, I'm 6 foot and I much prefer the shorter length youth stock...but then mine sits in the closet loaded with buckshot. Fits the wife fine too.

Simple. Wait a few weeks and Mesa Tactical will be selling an adapter that I came up with that allows you to put any 12ga 870 stock on a 20ga 870 Light weight. It should be for sale on their web site in a few weeks. With this adapter you can use any 12ga stock which opens up your options big time.

That's awesome and congrats.

The early 20ga 870's used the 12ga frame - IIRC, their SN always had an "X" in it. Those units use the 12ga buttstock and 20ga forearm. The later 20ga units (LW/LT or Express models) used a smaller receiver that is also shared with the 74x and 76x rifles, and all of those buttstocks will interchange with each other. The 28ga and the 410 are built on the 20ga frame; the buttstock will interchange but the forearm will not.

Go to Numrich and poke around through their 870 parts for a 20ga buttstock that you like.

What he said, I have long arms for my height 33" sleeve 5'10".

I really like the youth 20 gauge LW 870, it's very quick to swing, it's light. I use it for water fowl hunting out of my kayak, where a longer gun darn near impossible to get into action quickly.

Maybe I just hold the gun strange then, or I'm more larger than average than I thought at 6' 235 lbs with a 46 inch chest and 37 inch sleeves. When I shoulder the gun my right thumb is actually touching my cheek. It just feels too small to me, but maybe that is how it is actually supposed to be.

I do prefer the shorter barrel on the youth model though.

ETA I will try to get my wife to take a couple picture tonight if I can get off work at a reasonable time.
