Here in Hawaii, the .357 is the minimum handgun caliber allowed for hunting game mammals, according to regulations. The minimum long gun needs 1100 foot pounds of muzzle energy. All .357 magnums have less than 600 foot pounds of muzzle energy in this chart:
Havent used it on a deer but my Henry Big Boy .357 mag seems to do well with Buffalo Bore 180 grain hardcast at 1950 fps. Even "modern" deer shouldn't argue with that.
