Once again Remington has me all sorts of confused and my searches are getting me nowhere so hopefully I can sort this out here.

I am trying to buy a 20ga Wingmaster with a 26" vent rib barrel and Remchokes. I know I can buy a newer one, 90's to present but I like the older ones with the wood engraved with the fleur de lys, or New Orleans Saints logo if that helps. I think those are 60's-80's. I have found that there are two receivers, a 12ga and a scaled down receiver and my research tells me that if the serial number ends in "x" or "n" its the 12ga. I also have learned that the new 20ga's are all built on the scaled down receiver but not sure when that became the norm, but I would want one built on the scaled down receiver.

I did find a LW Wingmaster w/28" VR Barrel, remchokes, engraved wood, so I think my gun is out there under the "LW" name. So my question is, did Remington make what I'm looking for without stamping it "LW" or do I need to focus solely on getting a LW? Apparantly the LW became the only option but I cant figure out if that happened while Remington was still using the engraved wood or if that change came when the guns started looking more like the ones they are making today. Hope thats enough info and it makes sense.

Any suggestions or comments are appeciated.

I believe that the fleur-de-lis checkering you're referring to is pressed, not "engraved" or cut (the proper term when you're looking for checkering, with hand-cut and machine-cut as subsets).

Pressed checkering is really cheesy manufacturing, actually, but neat-looking in a retro post-war mass-market way like bakelite poker sets, vintage bowling shoes and old pool tables. Remember: the 870 was originally the cheap alternative to guns like the Model 12 and Model 37; it just turned out to be a damned good gun and its reputation buoyed its perception.

AFAIK the LW is the scaled 20 Gauge receiver; that's probably what you want, if you want "retro".

Interesting point there AB, I never thought about it that way. Its not that I dislike the new WM's, I have an early 2000's WM thats been nothing but perfect in everyway (j-lock and all), just trying to diversify a bit but now you've got me thinking again, that can't be good... :)

content: My buddy just found a 60's WM in 20, its awesome, I'd love one of those too.

If they had ever made a Tiki Edition Wingmaster back in the early 1960s, I'd sure as hell want one.:D
