20 inch vs 24 inch

High Road,

What am I gaining or lossing in barrel length in a 30-06 or a .308 with either a 20 or 24 inch barrel?

Im looking to hit paper up to 800 meters. Basically just have fun and challenge myself.

Id like to keep it rather cheap (600 or less rifle only) and I like the Remington 700 SPS with a 24in tapered compared to the Remington Tactical 20 inch bull.

What does a heavy/bull barrel do compared to a tappered?

I wish I had the knowledge to answer your questions. Hopefully someone will come along with the expertise.

My guess would be that your gain/loss will be in velocity (so much fps per inch of barrel length for identical loads) which in turn will affect your bullet drop at the greater ranges you are hoping to shoot at.

Like I said, I'm not an expert and I hope someone with knowledge will weigh in for you. I would like to know myself.
