I went to the local range last night and I had a nightmare trip. i loaded 100 rounds of laser cast 200 swc over 5 grains at an oal of 1.23 and turned my favorite pistol into a jam-o-matic. I had 30 jams that tore the neck of the brass slightly. This is very frustrating:cuss: Does anyone have any tips on loading this bullet

What kind of 1911? Has it fed SWC before?

Was it a failure to feed? If so, the jamming could be caused by seating it a bit too long.

What do you mean by tearing the neck of the brass? were the tears parallel to the bore or perpendicular?

1. This topic has been discussed multiple times here--do a search in this forum (use Google) to get the range of answers.

2. We need more info--for example:

5 grains of what powder?

what dies, and how is the crimp set up?

what dia LC bullet?

and on, and on....

My first reaction is that you need to clean our "favorite pistol's " ramp and chamber completely.

As far as the ammo goes, one possible issue is that you simply did not apply the crimp properly--and that you may not have crimped enough to straighten the mouth.

So, what die set are you using? And how do you have the dies adjustted?

Have you loaded this setup before?

Is the bullet an H&G #68 or one of its clones? If so, I load them 1.240". Some folks will seat them a bit deeper so that the shoulder of the bullet just peaks above the case mouth. I also load Lee 200 SWC's that I cast from wheel weights, and seat them 1.185". If the powder charge is sufficient, both of these seated at the mentioned OAL's function 100% in my SIG P220 and 1911A1. My SIG and GI 1911's chamber are OAL sensitive with SWC's like the #68, but the Lee could be seated a lot further out if desired in my situation.

I pulled these loads from my stash to show graphically how they look seated:

P.S. Neck torn... As in going into battery? Perhaps you need to taper crimp your rounds, or crimp a little more but NOT TOO MUCH. Looking forward to more details, especially the propellant used.

sorrry i should havy included more details. The powder is 231 and the crimp was .471 taper crimp. The load has shot before but I seated this lot a little deeper. i am using rcbs dies. The pistol is a kimber 1911. The feed ramp is very clean and has no major machine marks on it.

I load the Ranier 200 Gr SWC & the Hornady 200 Gr SWC at 1.260 O.A.L. and they shoot well in my pistols. When I shot lead I loaded various 200 Gr SWC's at around the same O.A.L. with the same success.

Yup, that is too many.

If you can't fiddle with the OAL and get the SWCs to run, note that Laser Cast has a 200 gr roundnose that will give you a better chance. It even has a bit of a shoulder and will cut nearly as clean a hole in the target as the SWC.

My STI is dependent on them (I actually use the moly coated Billy Bullet of the same style.)

thanks for the replies I will be back at the bench tonight after I install the updated safety prime on my turret press. i guess I will have to go back to the range;)

I have been loading 200 grain LSWC with an OAL of 1.250 and they do just fine in my Springer loaded model 1911, Colt series 80 Officer's Model, and my Auto Ordnance 1911.
