22-250 stringing

I have a model 7 predator 22-250, shoots horrable with factory loads,I worked up a few loads the best being .22cal nosler bt, 36gr varget, win. wlr primers, bullett seated at 2.150 to ogive which is .22 longer than the factory win.bst 55gr i was shooting. The problem is that it is stringing the groups up and down the group was 1.92" @ 100yd which is pretty bad in my book,and the holes were in a pretty much straight vertical line about a half inch apart. Any clue what im doing wrong or what i should look for?:banghead:

First off, is it stringing vertically with everything? Does it string sequentially as the barrel heats up?
If the answer is yes, chances are you will need to relieve the pressure from the stock that's pushing against the barrel.

I agree with NCsmitty. Keep us posted as to how it turns out. I'm thinking of getting the same rifle in the same chambering.

Yes, and Yes. I have took the time to free float the barrel. But have not bedded the action.Before i floated the barrel the groups were around 5" @ 100yd.

I am loading Hornady Vmax 40g oer 36g of Rel15 and a COAL of 2.350 and punching one raged hole at 100 yards. This is out of a heavy barrel Ruger 77VT.

I tried some 36g Hornadys without much luck.

I load 50gr V-Max in Nosler brass at 2.35in COL. This is max SAMMI length.

I use Varget and CCI primer.

Works great in 700 VLS.

How old is you Predator? The reason I ask is in 2009 the twist rate on the 22-250 Predator was 1-9 3/8" if memory serves me correctly. Much more friendly for shooting heavier bullets, 69-75gr.

This year they went back to the more traditional 1-14 twist which would serve you well with the 36gr bullets.

Too bad, I thought at least one manufacturer finally supplied a twist that would make the 22-250 a good longer range 22.

Are we talking about a Remington Model-7 ???

I have two Rem. M7's and they both exhibited the traits you mentioned when new.

I've free floated and glass bedded the reciever and tweaked the trigger on my M7 in 7mm08. It now behaves reasonably. Still no tack driver, but decent 1-1.5" groups with bullets and powders it likes.

The .223 is a bit tempermental, but I haven't done anything except tweak the trigger on it. With loads it likes, and not allowing the barrel to get too hot, it'll shoot under 1" at 100yds with the 18.5" bbl. It really likes the Sierra 50-65gr bullets and BLC2 and Reloader15.

Something that made a big difference on both, is placement of the front sand-bag under the foward guard screw rather than further out on the fore-end.

While I dont have a predator, my .22-250 with 52 grain SMK's and 38 grains of varget routinely gives me groups of under 1 inch @100 meters. This is from a Savage LPRV.
