I am shooting a Weatherby Vanguard in 22-250. I can't seem to narrow the shot group I am getting with this thing. I have tried Varget at 36.5 gr. with a 55gr. Hornady V-Max and have tried 35.5 grains of Varget with the same bullet. Both give me 2.5 inch groups at 100 yards. What else should I try? I know it's not me cause my 16 Weather Worrior Savage in .223 is a .75 inch shooter at 100 yards.
I had also bought a few boxes from a local guy with the A-max bullet and he says he gets .5 inch groups at 100 with his Weatherby Vanguard in 22-250.

Maybe try a different bullet?

Thanx,
Mike

Double check your bore for cleanliness, then you might try a lighter bullet. I don't know about yours, but many .22-250's have a 1:14" twist and just can't shoot a 55gr bullet accurately. I've had best results in my Remington (1:14" also) with 40-45gr bullets.

Mike, you have only just begun! Only one bullet, with only two different powder charges, isn't much of a load development.

The v-max is a good bullet as far as groups go, so if it were me, I'd try some other increments of varget,(also a good accurate powder).

Hold the phone, according to my Hornady fifth edition manual, you are 1.9 grains OVER max with your 36.5 grain load!!!! Max is listed at 34.6 grains for a 55 grain bullets. You're probably pushing a lightly constructed bullet too fast, deforming it. Where'd you get your load data?

Try seating them out farther towards the lands. Weatherbys are known to have long throats.

15" TC Encore gets 1 MOA or slightly better when I do my part with:

FC case, Fed210primer, REM PSPCL 55gr. IMR4064 32.0 gr. @ 2.355"OAL
(cannelure)
and

FC case, Fed210 primer, REM PSPCL 55gr., WC846 34.0 gr. @2.365"OAL

Some rifles/TCs prefer "low-tech" reasonably priced bullets

My Ruger 77V does well with a rather top load of IMR4350 or H414 and about any Sierra bullet of 50 -55 grains. The Berger 60 grain flatbase is accurate, so don't think you are terribly limited by the 14" twist. I also got some good shooting with 60 grain Hornadys, but can't tell from my notes whether it was the HP or SP. Tried both, one was good and one was bad but I don't have them properly identified.

New to posting here but not new to load development for 22-250. I run 36.5 of Varget and a 55gr Nosler BT .... I think all you need to do is play with OAL. That is a great combo you are trying. My Mod 70 HB Varmit likes 0.020" bullet jump with the Balistic Tip.

By playing with bullet jump I have three different projectiles all with different OAL's that shoot well under 1" @ 200yds. All use Varget and CCI BR primers, neck sized only W-W cases trimmed to lenght.

I slit a case neck and carefully, carefully chambered/unloaded the round ten times and got a measurement for land kissing. I backed off (shortened) my OAL 0.050" and closed in @ 0.010" increments and watched my groups shrink.

Disclaimer:This is what I did, worked for me without special tools. Use this technique at your own risk. HHjr.

Is there any load, factory or otherwise, that gives you tight groups? If not, it might not be the ammo. It might be stuff like the bedding of the forearm, for example.

I've had a couple of Sakos in .22-250 that benefitted greatly from free-floating the forearm, and then shimming out at the end. Went from one MOA + down to 1/2 to 3/4 MOA.
