.22 Cal scope needed

All these topics about scopes, might as well ask also :neener:

I would like to add a scope to our .22. What would a good, cheap scope would you guys recommend for a 22 rifle?

I think a 3x-9 would be over-kill, but heck so many different manufactures out there, so why not ask and see. Tasco?

I've never had good luck with anything Tasco. Others have, so the universe must just hate me.

What I have had good luck with is the BSA Cateye, which is apparently available in different configurations depending on the phase of the moon, but mine is 4-9x45 (I think?) adjustable, holds its zero well even when zooming around all over the place, and came with rings for a .22. Also worthy of note is that I bought another Cateye (I got them both at Dick's) and slapped it on my Gamo Shadowmatic, and the spring recoil hasn't busted the scope to pieces yet.

Point in its favor.
 
Depends on the rifle I'd be mounting a scope to.

If grooved for rimfire scope then I'd probably just go with a small Tasco in 4x.

If drilled and tapped, then I might go for a full 1" tube. Anything within budget 4x, 2-7x. 3-9x if it's an accurate shooter. It all depends on how the gun shoots, what weather or low light conditions you'll be shooting in. How often? Scopes are like rifles. There's few cheep ones that are good. You can pay too much. Personally, I'll never be able to own a Swarovski.

So, don't put a $100 saddle on a $10 horse.

OK< so if it's a Marlin model 60, they're accurate enough, but the trigger sucks just enough not to want to make the sights/optics any better.

Ruger 10-22, Drilled and tapped for a full size set of rings/scope. Accurate enough, and even better with a trigger kit, to deserve a scope. 3-9x not out of the question. Golf ball at 100yds 3 out of five shots should be expected if the shooter does his part. -Especially if you've thought about putting an aftermarket barrel on.

Ruger 77-22, by all means.. 3-9x.

There are others. I just use these plinkers as example.

Yes, that helps. Basically a Model 60.. Not a terrific trigger. Not drilled and tapped for full size rings and 1" scope. (I don't think) It's meant to use a rimfire scope. And by comparison, few of them are up to task when set next to a 1" tube with 40 or 50mm objective.

Fact is, that little aluminum receiver housing isn't designed for that added weight. Yes, I'll bet that a full featured scope is easily twice the weight of a rimfire scope. Those rimfire ring grooves are not as strong as a Weaver rail.

So, an option that may not have been mentioned yet, if you don't want to go with a smaller objective rimfire scope, (Although I have a nice little rimfire 4x Weaver on a model 60 bolt .22 that is sufficient beyond open sights.) I ask then, to keep things light, using rimfire rings in the groves supplied, is have you thought of a small RedDot sight? Something like an AimPoint II?

22 Scope...

Most anything you buy at Walmart will work just fine for most all situations. I have many 22 rifles and have cheap to expensive scopes on them. With few exceptions the cheap scopes work just fine.

One of my AR's has a dedicated .22lr upper. I put a cheap 3x9x40 Simmons on it that I got for $30.

It does awesome and will pop Coke bottle tops right off of a bottle all day long @ 50 or so yards. These are decent cheap scopes and should never give you any trouble on a .22lr.

I am going to need some advice.

Going to shoot some varmints, even maybe some little coyotes. get bore and see nada, then shoot some targets. So both I and my son need scopes for our 22. cal's


I have the Marlin 795 (Which above said I may need a rimfire type scope, but guy @ academy that it would fit others.

Anyways my side-kick (son) has a new Rossi youth size Rimfire 22.cal, which I just put on a Rossi scope bracket and bought some aftermarket 1” high scope rings.


So as of now I am looking to get any of these scopes for my Marlin 795 and son's Rossi.

*Not sure which power I would need, so any help or suggestions would be great on what power to get on the scopes!! I am looking for something for the range of no more then 200 yards (just to be safe or brave :eek: )

The budget price is no more then $60.00 mark for my scope. The brands are:

I guess I need a rimfire scope. He is only 9, so I doubt he pop anything over 60 yard mark. I seen plenty of rimfire type scopes in the no more then 20 dolla mark. :D

Ok, My sons have the Rossi single shot too. The .243 barrels have 3-9x40 Nikons. The .22 barrels still have open sights. It'll make them better shooters if they learn to shoot with open sights.

But, since you want scope on the LR barrel, Those barrels are capable of surprising accuracy. A 4x, 2-7, or 3-9 power scope, with low rings on the supplied rail, of what ever's in the budget, will be fine. Simmons, Nikon, Tasco, Burris, ... Just pick one that's on sale. Mount and sight it in. I hope your son has lots of fun. Be sure to use the supplied tang for the hammer so your son will be able to cock with the scope mounted. Don't mount the scope in high rings. It's always best if you can keep the scope as close to the center of the bore if you can make the rest of the weapon function.

As for your 795 Marlin, My statements earlier. Yes, you probably can get a 1" tube mounted.. Just like the guy @ Academy said.. But I don't recommend it. You're better off with a smaller rimfire scope on that receiver design. Don't believe me? Call Marlin.

Now?? .22 LR, even hiper velociy loads, Out to 200yds? Even 100yds is pushing it for .22LR for any kind of reliable accuracy from anything other than a good target gun with good smooth trigger. Are you aware of the trajectory for .22LR at that distance?

Yes, the ammunition box does say it'll shoot a mile. Yup. It will. With the trajectory of a rainbow. So you set that scope so point of impact, (zero), is dead on or near to it at 200yds. Now try to hit something at 75 feet. Let me know how you do.

Well I settled for both guns w/ Simmons scopes.

For the Rossi, just a little cheap'O
It's the Simmons 4x20 Rimfire Rifle Scope for $7.00. I am sure it will do fine for him.

As for my marlin, I decided after some searching on here, seems like the Simmons 3-9x32 22 Mag Rifle Scope (silver) for $40.00 mark will make my rifle look good and make me happy.

So I am looking @ about 50.00 shipped for both scopes.

Oh, as for the extended hammer on my sons Rossi, it's already put on :D.

Of course I know better that my 22lr is not accurate @ 200 yrds. The only reason why I said that was for my scope being my Binoculars also :) .. not to try to put a cap in the squirels butt @ 200 yrds :neener: .

Either way, seems I can't loose w/ Simmons product. Heck my old Bristish303 w/ a simmons 3-9x scope which still works after being in storage for over 13 years still looks and works fine. So why not stay with them, right?

there are two tath i recommend, that do not overpower the rifle, nor are too big. Dasiy makes a nice air rifle rated 3.9.32, and tasco makes one , same specs, that comes in a hard plastic pkg., that also has glasses and muffs in the pack. about 35 bucks, and the glass is unusually clear. both can be found at Gander mtn. or other big package stores.
 
Im the king of CHEAP when it comes to rimfire scopes.

I dont compete.....I plink. I see NO reason to spend $200 on a scope for a $100 rifle to go shoot pop cans. Makes NO sense to me.

I use two different scopes on my rimfires.

First is the TASCO 3-7x20 **$17** - I also have one made by BSA and they look identical. I suspect they are made in the same factory in China and just labeled differently. Either way these cost $17 at Wal-Mart and come with the correct rings to mount to a dovetailed receiver. These are a FAR cry better then the little 4x scopes for $7.....these are USABLE. I can easily put 5 shots into a silver dollar at 40 yards with my Henry and one of these scopes. Another think I like is they arent large......sometimes a scope on a rimfire looks out of place because they are so large.

Second is a TACO 3-9x40 **$40** - these are quite a bit more money. The scope cost $30 then you need a $10 set of rings as well. I buy mine from Wal-Mart as well. I have a couple of these on a few guns because I wanted to try them out. They are much easier to use out past 50 yards then the above scope.....but I dont plink out that far usually. They look oversized on alot of guns....which I dont like. They do work good and are great if your looking for a little more scope on a budget.

Both of these are merely cheap plinking scopes but if your not competing they will do the job......great for cans, reactive targets and the like in the back 40 on a warm day.
