22 caliber, 16 inch barrel revolver

I had a 9.5" Single-Six and it just felt ridiculous. Crazy accurate and it was a wonderful gun but I just couldn't warm up to it. I picked up one of the Rough Rider 16" at a gun show and I just giggled a little and set it back down. I'm sure some folks will love them but I'm not one.

It's a survival gun for preppers who have "bugged out".

Not only is it a .22 hand gun, but: With a hook and fishing line it's a handy short fishing pole! With an attached reel you could fly fish!
With a plug to protect the muzzle it's a handy walking stick!
With a blade tied to the barrel it's a short thrusting spear or bayonet. Spear that feral hog then pull the trigger six times!
Modify a hatchet head and it's a handy hatchet!

Could be the most practical you will ever own!

Or not.

I think I read somewhere that 22 LR ammunition developed maximum velocity from a 16 inch barrel, and that longer barrels actually reduced velocity. As with so many things I think I know, I have no idea where or when I might have read this. Does anyone know if it is true, false, or that things are not that simple?

You can look here and see...

The info shows for both test barrels and for actual guns. The bullet and the gun make a substantial difference. it's not universally true.

I wish I could remember where the figures are, but the cylinder gap leaks out enough pressure that once rimfire revolver barrels reach 7" to 9" long, going longer than that actually produces lower muzzle velocity figures.

So, the 16" barrel surely isn't to get the bullet to go much faster. However, the usual things about sight radius and fun still apply. :D

I've had a 16" barreled autoloading pistol, it really was only useful as a "hand rifle" with a scope. Best used with a pair of shooting sticks or bipod, IMO. :)

"And then God said, "Pistol Barrels shorter than Seven inches..."
(Yeah, obscure, but it's in there somewhere)

:D

Heritage has made a carbine that's supposed to be out at some point this year, but I can't find much info on it. I want one, but I think I'll wait until the new wears off before buying it.

Yes, I actually handled one of the guns that is on Gunbroker right now (local shop sells on gb) and it’s not as bad as it would seem. It definitely is front heavy. I already have a 16” .357 as well and it is surprisingly shootable, but the plan to stock THAT gun hasn’t worked out yet, but I WILL buy the carbine when it comes out and it will supposedly be in the $300 range. I will say though, at $180ish OTD the revolver and a home grown skeleton stock seems like a hell of an option. I already have a spare heritage grip frame that could be drilled and tapped for attaching a stock.

Well, if they're the one selling a Rancher for the Buy Now price of $350, they ought to be ashamed! MSRP is only $297, so I'd think about $250 would be more in line for street prices. Then again, that's gunbroker for you. However, I notice that Heritage has updated their website to include the Rancher: https://heritagemfg.com/rifle/rr-rancher-22lr-bk-16-6rds-walnut-bh-sight-w-sling/ . Like I said, I'll own one at some point but I'd like to wait until the bugs get worked out of it.

PS, sorry for the steering off topic. We'll get back to business now!

Only pirates with peg legs would care to IWB carry that thing.

Not my cup of tea, no matter the performance increase.

Yeah, I thought the Ruger “Charger” was a great idea so I bought one. I am pretty sure I only fired 3 or 400 rounds through it and then sold it.

This gun would have looked like a fun gun for me before I bought that Charger. Now, I wouldn’t waste time or money on something like that.

Yes , you certainly would need a rest or bipod to steady a barrel of that length. However...

I cannot imagine setting up at a shooting station at my local club with a Heritage .22 on a bipod. If I were to see an acquaintance with such a set up I would surely give him the raspberries , couldn't resist.

I saw a new one in a showcase Wednesday as I lurked about in a small mom and pop LGS in Beaumont Ca.

Yes, the Uber-long barreled Heritage “Buntline” revolver looks sort of intriguing... and at the same time it looks completely ridiculous.

I looked, briefly, and moved on.

Stay safe.

There's another option as well...

It would take some work of course. Unlike Rose McGowan in "Planet Terror" you, because it's a single action, likely couldn't fly through the air. But it's another option!
