I had a very strange thing happen to me the other day. I was out shooting with a buddy. He was using a Ruger 10/22 and I have my Mark II. We cleaned and went to shoot the next day, but I got a cleaning rod stuck in my chamber. I guess he handed me a ~.25 cleaning rod versus a .22? I had powder burning on the sides of my cases and even one split case. But then again, some cases were deformed and wouldn't fit back in the chamber but some would just slip right back in? It was happening to both of us through, so maybe just ammo? We used ~4 boxes of .22, all the same brand/manufacture.

Basically, I'm wondering if I did damage to my chamber with a hard plastic cleaning rod or if it was ammo or if... ?

Thanks guys.

What brand of ammo??

And no, you didn't damage your chamber with a plastic cleaning rod.

Yeah, I know that steel is harder than plastic, but I just thought I'd throw it in as a possibility (even at the risk of me sounding quite slow.)

We were using some bulk .22. Don't remember the exact name, but it was a green box and something to do with either thunder or lightning...

It seemed to function fine, only 2 duds in a few hundred.

AH!
Remington Thunderbolt!
Well theres your problem right there.

Goggle Remington Thunderbolt problems and you will find the same exact things you were experiencing.

I know I must be old, but the statemet from the OP's post above:

"It seemed to function fine, only 2 duds in a few hundred."

I don't recall ever getting duds when I was shooting as a kid, decades ago. It disturbs me that we're all just accepting the fact that some ammunition you buy isn't going to function at all. It isn't right.

this past year had 1 rem thunderbolt case split and about 7% failure to fire (solid strikes) from a box of ww box bulk pack

ahhh for the good ol'days

You betcha it isn't right!!

I never had a .22 RF misfire I can remember with Win or Rem ammo in 40+ years until about 15 some years ago.

Now you have to buy top of the line CCI if you don't want to get them in every box of ammo.

The bulk-pack stuff is horrendous!
Quality control has taken a fifth row seat behind price-point on .22 RF ammo for sure.

And it simply isn't acceptable to me.
