.22 For The Wife

I have a Heritage and like it. As I have stated in other posts I have had a Ruger Single Six in the past that I bought new and sold it. And a few years later I bought a Heritage. I am not saying that they are equal to a Ruger, I find that they a nice serviceable .22 revolver at an affordable price. Another plus is that they have more barrel lengths and grip profiles than Ruger. The next one I buy is going to have bird's head grips and a 3 1\2" barrel in 22 mag. A good kit-belly gun IMO.

Single Six if a single action is okay with her.

Or find a SP101 .22, those are fun, although hard to find, and maybe more than you want to spend.

I've fired a Heritage and it is a nice shooting revolver. I have a single six and like it much better. The Heritage is about half the cost of the Ruger. The Ruger is heads and shoulders better in quality than the Heritage, but if you are not going to shoot thousands of rounds through it, it will be a good buy.

If you are looking for a .22 for the wife, I'd suggest you let her have a major part of the decision. In the $200-$300 price range you can get an S&W 22A, Heritage, maybe a single six, Ruger MKIII, Buck Mark , Neos and P22. You have a wide choice and she may like one better than the other. I've never fired a Neos and don't like their looks, but I hear they are pretty good pistols. I've fired a Rough Rider and have a MKIII 22/45, 22A, single six, MKIII Hunter, MKIII GC, Buck Mark Standard and P22. She prefers shooting the 22a and single six. Her choice. Actually, she prefers my 80-year-old S&W .38 special because it "fits good."

If my wife wanted one of her own, I'd be happy to drive her to gun stores (if asked), but I'd stay out of any decision unless my opinion were requested.

The under $300 is the hard part. I'd recommend the S&W 34 or 63, but they've gone way up in price. The round butt version with factory grips is small enough to fit someone with Barbie hands.

I have a Heritage with the 6.5" barrel and adjustable fiber-optic sight and love shooting it. I am sure the Ruger is a better gun, but I don't shoot it much and when I do it is just plinking so it suits me very well.
