Alrighty I did a lot of searches and I know the single six is king when it comes to .22 revolvers. Its what I would like to get but I'm on a tight budget, and my intended use is a little different than most. So see what you guys think of this.
I'm wanting a handgun I can shoot around home. I actually thought quite a bit about an air pistol, due to noise and range. I got to looking at it, and for the cost of a gun, and ammo, I might as well shoot a .22 with CB's. I can set up for this easily and safely. I could shoot .22LR if I wanted but noise gets to be an issue, don't want to bother anyone.
I also would like to be able to use it to dispatch varmints in my trap once in awhile. Would be alot easier on the trap than my 9mm  So my requirements so far are that it handles .22 L and .22LR. Figure that means a revolver, thats cool have been wanting one for awhile anyway.

Ability to shoot .22 mag would just be a fun factor for the rare occasions when I have time to go somewhere and shoot more powerful stuff. Maybe dispatch a varmint here and there as well. Not a necessity by any means.

So since I'm on a tight budget (college student :) ),plan on using low power loads 90% of the time, and don't absolutely have to be able to shoot the mags. I'm wondering if I really have to spring for the single six(have to see what they're going for around here now anyhow, not sure I can afford one anyway).

A local store has heritage rough riders on sale for $139 with both cylinders and a display box right now. I have read a lot of bad, and a lot of decent reviews on these and I'm thinking that if it would hold together it would fit the bill pretty well, but the horror stories have me looking for something else. I haven't seen them in person yet though to have any opinion on them.

I did get to look at the EAA bounty hunter the other day. Could get one for around $200. A quick look over made it seem pretty decent. It was a nice size and comfortable in my hand. This seems to fit my requirements pretty well. Wondering what the concensus on these is now. Reviews varied widely in the past, anything changed?

Another option is to get a taurus or something, that only handles .22S, L ,LR . I don't know what all is available around here, but judging by MSRP's , I could go this route cheaper than a new Ruger.

I'd be open to something used too, but hesitate since I'm not overly knowledgeable on condition, and fair pricing.

So what would you recommend? Thanks for any ideas :)

I'd pick a well used single six before buying any of those others that you mentioned.
Now stop thinking so much.
Crazy college students.....
;)

Before you get all excited about CB caps.........TRY.....one in a revolver.

I did.

Holy SMOKE!!!! Whatta RACKET !!!

They...ain't....quiet.

:what:

i paid $200 for my lightly used single six a month or two ago. the gun could've passed for new - infact i thought it was, until the proprietor told me it was used...

so, if you can afford $140 for a heritage, i'm sure you can spring the extra 10 or 20 bucks to spring for a solid condition, but used, single six...

Yeah a used single six would be a given :D They've got a good enough reputation I'd buy one and feel confident about it. I think you guys have a lot better luck than me though cause I never see any deals like your mentioning :banghead:

I guess what I'm wondering is if the wear issues on the cheaper guns are due to strength, and they don't hold up to a lot of full power loads.....or if its just generally crappy construction thats going to make problems show up just from being cycled. At this point I don't think I'll buy a heritage anyhow.
Still interested in the bounty hunter, or opinions on something like a Taurus DA/SA .22 revolver.

Noise isn't a huge concern, the CB's will be quieter than LR's regardless of how loud they are. I can set up a safe backstop for them easily, and be LESS annoying than if I was shooting something else. The neighbors can hear my springer air rifle too, but its not that window shaking boom that my great plains rifle has ya know?

Yep :D I looked at that one before postin my question and thought it looked good. Is that a recomendation? Do you have one?
I think I'm going to hit a store or two on wednesday and see whats available.

Let me see - I was to a gun show in Kingman . AZ a couple months back and there was a single six there with both cylinders for $150.00 . It had a area of surface rust on the barrel but all else was good and would have made a great shooter.

Just before I left for AZ for a visit I stopped at my local Gander Mountain and located a used Tuarus model 94 in nice condition. $145 with the tax. I have been shooting the heck out of my Tuarus and it is accurate and so far 100%reliable. I like it a lot !

i had one of those 9-shot taurus guns. worked well, was pretty decent. my biggest complaint was that the sights ran out of adjustment before 25 yards. other than that, it was fine. my brother decided he liked it, so he has it now...

Thanks guys, looking like its either gonna be a ruger or taurus depending on what I can find in my price range. Gonna hit the stores either today or tommorow and see what I can find.

Well I'm almost too ashamed to come back and admit it but I bought a Heritage today
There aren't too many gun shops around here without going inside columbus's corporation limit, which means buying a columbus permit and all that BS. I refuse to do that, so there's only 2 shops I can buy from within about 30 miles. One of them is a one man show, and his prices are pretty high. I'd like to support him, but the mark up is just too much.
So I went to vance's. They really don't have much in the way of .22 revolvers, my choices were the heritage ($149, 6" barrel and both cylinders, lifetime warranty), some used S&W's for $400+ or a bunch of used Rugers. The salesman showed me a heritage first and I wasn't impressed, so I asked what else he had. I got really excited when I saw the rugers, there were even some under $200.
Then I started taking them out of the case to look at :( :banghead: :barf:
One listed at $220 looked really good until I turned it over and saw the end of the ejecter tube was crushed(HOW DO YOU DO THAT? ), and the cylinder wobbled like crazy when it was supposed to be locked. There was a groove worn all the way around the cylinder. Another one was completely rusted over, and had a loose cylinder. Another was beat to hell and had a funny catch in the hammer that felt like a half cock that had been filed away, had a groove on the cylinder, and one side of it had a big streak worn through the bluing. The only one that had both cylinders was almost $300 (used). They were garaunteed for 30 days, but I couldn't find one I felt safe taking a gamble on.

So I had him get out a 2nd heritage to see if they all were as hacked up as the first one I looked at (marred finish, crooked front sight). The second was as flawless as an ugly gun like this could be. I checked it over as close as I could. Turned smoothly, locked up tight. Pretty comfortable gripl, decent trigger. The guy said they'd sold thousands of them, and never had a problem, and started listing gun rags that gave them good reviews. So I figured I'd give it a try and I bought one.
I got home and cleaned it and ran 4 cylinders of CB longs through it. It ran flawlessy, and was a lot of fun to shoot. Seems like it will be pretty accurate, and the CB's weren't too loud at all.
Then I ran a cylinder of LR through it. It ate those without any trouble too, still seemed accurate. These are pretty loud though.
So I stuck the other cylinder in and shot a couple magnums. It ate those fine and functioned fine. They're too dang loud to shoot around here without having someone piss and moan though. For what they cost I doubt I'll shoot them much anyhow, just be fun for a range trip now and then.

I'll be sure and post if I ever have any trouble with this ugly little thing. But for now it seems like it will serve my purposes pretty well, and will be a fun plinker. Awful ugly though!
