Let me start off first by saying I hope that this doesn't become a calibre war or some thread about hunting deer with a .22 LR.

My first choice in a hunting load is Velociters, then High Velocities that run and shoot well in my 10/22, either Winchester 555s or CCI minimags in my case.

Head shotting rabbits and squirrels is fine, for anything bigger I'm talking hearts and lungs (coons, opossums, etc). What kind of game do y'all take with your 22s?

I pretty much use mine for Squirrels and the like...rabbits, and thats about all I hunt with .22 with the exception of keeping coyotes in check.

I mostly use Stingers and Remington Golden Bullets!

I will also add... my squirrel hunting is usually a .22 Short!...If you have never done this..Get you a Faulks Squirrel call and go to the woods and take a load off! and quietly get your limit! :)

I usually use CCI CB's (very quiet) or Remington Golden Shorts (These are zippy and a little louder than the CB's but do a good job too! Remeber adjust your sights for the Shorts. Wont take much adjustment inside 60 or so yards.

Squirrels, rabbits, grouse, pheasant, woodchucks, moles, crows, skunks, raccoons, bobcats, porcupines, turtles (as a kid).

I've probably shot over a thousand rats at open dumps, as a teenager in the 50s and early 60s. It was a popular pastime and some folks did it at night, using car headlights. I counted 97 one day.

Like Picher, more rats than I could count shooting at the dump in days past! Now its mostly squirrels, rabbits, and woodchucks.

I'm another fan of CCI minimags, but I did pick up a brick of remington gold the other day. With my .22lr, I hunt squirrel and rabbit, maybe some of the smaller varmints like coons and possum, and the rare yote. But I live close enough to civilization where a) not too many critters come around and b) some one might call the cops. Not being within the township limits, I don't think I can get a citation, but neither am I wanting to really test that theory.

CCI and Aguila Subsonic HP for squirrels and rabbits.

Velocitors, Win. Super Speed HP, and CCI Minimags for small varmints.

squirel, possum, coon, groundhog, rabbit, basicly any pest that needs getting rid of.

i always go for head shots and always use federal 550 bulk packs

First gun I ever shot was an old bolt action .22 loaded with shorts. Must have been about 5 years old. Seems like we used to buy a box of 25 for a quarter. My grandfather used to take me behind his house that was on the edge of the swamp off the Amite River. I learned to shoot by plinking cans in the burn pile at the bottom of the hill.

A year or so later he trusted me enough to start giving me a box of bird shot every weekend to keep the birds out the fig and orange trees.

Unfortunetly about 5 years later his house was burglarized. That gun, a Belgium Browning, a Mossberg pump, a single shot .22 Bolt and a couple of my dad's Korean War relic guns were stolen. No serial numbers were written down. That was about 40 years ago. All I have left are the memories.

And the best thing in this world is a Thief cant steal out memories! As low as they are they just cant get em!

JEB.... you remember the old Federal Lightnings? we used to buy the bricks and shoot all day long...more memories! :)

This site has some of the old Nostalgia stuff available!

I think it is neat...I have some of both of the wildcat boxes with the cat on box, some of the super X, some of the peters with the pheasant, Alot of the Remington Tins, Would LOVE to get one of the Winchester Boy Scouts Boxes....look at BSA logo stamped in it.

Geckgo .. :uhoh: Sorry Highjacking your thread was not my intention....

Actually just got back from hunting raccoons with my buddies and all we use are 22 rifles and an occasional pistol. They are great when you don't want to wake the dead with a shotgun or want to shoot lots of animals without disturbing the neighbors. Got 4 raccoons and a possum with head shots and it knocks them out of those trees in a hurry!

Mainly squirrels. Did kill a 250 pound hog with it last weekend. Ok, ok, it was a domesticated one we were butchering. A head shot at 5 feet on a hog in a pen I guess does not really count as hunting, does it?

Oh yeah, I just use whatever bulk pack of ammo is on sale.

I took this cross fox with the 22 bbl. on my "go to" gun,

These days, i do find myself hunting with my 22WMR more than a LR though.

For LR hunting i use more "Yellow Jackets" than anything else...

Nice little fox, but it is a gray fox not a "cross fox". The "cross fox" is a color mutation of the red fox and the gray fox is a separate species.

All I know for a fact is .......

It is a redish/gray fox.......

that crossed in front of the wrong "go to gun"

Nice picture! ....... now I want to go in the woods...............;)

I guess my hide buyers needs to learn something then, he called it same as me.

I guess he does at that, and a hide buyer should know better. If your uncertain who is right just search google images for both gray fox and cross fox. You will see there is a clear difference between the two besides the considerable difference in fur type. A quick and easy way to tell the two apart beside just a generally different color pattern and body shape is that grays will always have a black tipped tail while cross foxes, which are a color mutation of the red fox, nearly always retain the white tail tip reds have.

I'll hunt anything smaller than a coyote or a medium sized hog with a 22. Using cci stingers, i'll shoot a 'yote or a hog. My grandpa killed hogs on his family's farm using a 22 to the ear, and if I can get an accurate shot, I'll do the same. (I haven't yet)
