I own 3 Glocks--two 9mm and one .45acp. I am thinking of getting a .22 both for cheap shooting and to ease my wife into handgun shooting.

The only .22's I have fired were a Ruger semi-auto at a basic handgun class (where my wife and I shot similar groupings) and a friend's Neos last Saturday--the latter equipped with a cheap red dot sight.

What are the pros and cons of the Ruger, Beretta and Browning .22 semi-autos? Any and all opinions are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

The only cons I've ever read about them include the Neos trigger and the takedown on the other two, one being tricky until you get it down, and the Browning needing the allen wrench.
Ruger has more variations (I've got 5) and the Buckmark just being wonderful all the way around.
I've only fondled the Beretta to date.

Neos trigger...

What are the complaints about the Neos' trigger? One one forum, someone said Neos triggers "suck" but that's hardly helpful.

If you already own Glocks, why not simply put a conversion kit on one? I highly recommend the Advantage Arms kits - see here for details. Avoid Ciener - customer service sucks, as does the personal attitude of the owner...

Conversion...

I had thought of the conversion kit and, at one time, had come within a hair's breadth of ordering one. It occurred to me, though, through discussions with others, that my wife may want her own handgun--something exclusively hers.

Of course, all of this is something of a reach since I have just gotten her to the point where she will go with me to a range and rent a .22!

Get her a Glock 9mm and a conversion kit. That way when she gets proficient with the .22 and wants to move up she already has a weapon she's comfortable with. If she tires of it and quits, you get another Glock. Can you say Win,Win? :D

Which beretta? I have shot a model 87 in .22 at my range, it was ok but the trigger was not as nice as the Buck Mark I shot before it. It also spit hot powder a bit which none of the other guns did. The cuffs of my brother's shirt have permanent dark spots now.

Fondle a few of them at your local gunshop. Thats what made up my mind. I've shot enough berettas to know I don't like them. The ruger 22/45 seems ok, but the buckmark fits better and I shoot it well. The Neos and Mark II have a more acute grip angle which is less useful to me.

Let her pick it. It is her hand it needs to fit, and it will mean more to her if she selects it. I think the ruger is a great pistol, easy to operate and hit with, and last forever.

Check out the Walther P22? I do not have one yet, but it is my next purchase. It may have more in common with the glock than the others.

Hey OD...go back to that Glock Forum where you belong!

You got the answers from a prior post. Most people that are competitive shooters seem to swear by their Browning or Ruger choices. When someone says "I like the new Neos" you get the comments that the trigger sucks. I think, from reading other posts, that in this case "sucks" means the initial travel and the amountof pull needed. Idid shoot a fellow's Browning that was competitively used and the trigger was what I would call a hair trigger...I don't know if by comparison they would think the Neos "sucks".

The Neos comes apart for cleaning almost as easy as the Glocks, and it cleans as fast.

I also did the AA thing..actually had the order filled out on line and was just about to click the mouse, I decided that a 2nd gun would be more fun. Now interrestingly my wife does not like the Neos. Not because it has anything "wrong" with it, but because she is too accurate with it for target shooting. If it were apples or cans or something else where the satisfaction is more than a hole in paper, well that might be different. My wife prefers the G19...and she shoots it a lot better than I do.

This is a fun FORUM also.... :)

The trigger on MY Neos is fine. Its just my opinion, but i dont believe the Buckmark will last as long as a Neos or Ruger. When youre shooting .22lr,the rounds add up pretty quick.

I only recommend these kits to guys who have no intention of ever reloading. And while I do not think that is prudent, some guys simply have zero interest, and that is their business.

Yes, I own a Ruger 22/45 and I 'warm' up with it. Yes, it has the most rounds through it because I always take it with me.

However, the goal is to prepare me for firing a 1911 style pistol.

I truly enjoy my 22/45 and the stainless 10/22 I use as a companion piece. In fact, if a friend called me to just 'shoot up a brick' and chat, I would leave the centerfires at home.

But if you're looking to better know your defense gun, buy reloads or roll them yourself and shoot lower pressure loads rather than .22LRs for practice.

P22

If it is for the wife ... thry the Walther P22 ... women love them, and they shoot nicely. It has numerous safety features, ambi controls and adjustable grips and sights.

Great starter/plinking gun. I love mine, it is my second, no problems in 1k rounds and counting.

My opinion? Pass by the new gun cases and peek at the older used models. You want real accuracy then look at the High Standards, Colt Woodsman Match Targets, Browning Challengers, the older S&W M41s, and the European counterparts. They won't be cheap, but you will have a quality pistol that's capable of outstanding accuracy proven on many target ranges all the way up to the Olympics. Something that most of the pistols you see in the dealer's new cases today can't say.
